Mission Statement

WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO BE MULTI-TALENTED?

To me, it means that we can’t fit into a box. We can try to, sure. In fact, some of us spend our whole lives trying to fit into a box. (HINT: this is really, really sad.) Most of us are told from a very young age – by teachers, parents, mentors, or all of the above – that we must choose something to do with our lives. Preferably one thing. We go to college so that we can get degrees and, ultimately, get good-paying jobs. But let me ask you a question: What is better? A job that you might end up hating? Or a life that you might end up loving?

I AM BY NO MEANS TELLING YOU TO BE AN UNEMPLOYED POTATO. Actually, I’m telling you the exact opposite – you are limiting yourself. Ever since that universe-stopping question in second grade, “What do you want to be when you grow up?” your mind has (either consciously or subconsciously) trained itself to limit your capabilities to a couple of lukewarm life options. IT’S A SOCIETAL TRAP.

I have some friends who are currently attending (or going to attend) university and because I know them so well, I can tell that they are just drained. They don’t know what they really want for their lives, and they are struggling with the decisions that have just fallen into their laps. They have to pick something. One thing. And study that. And get a job doing that. For the rest of their lives.

SO CAN WE JUST…NOT DO THIS??

It’s become so clear to me that we are ALL multi-talented, multifaceted creatures – raging rivers, as my sister put it – and we are meant to go in all different directions. I’ve struggled with this a lot, guys. I want to be a musician. But I also want to be a writer. But I also want to be a singer. But I also want to be an activist. But I also want to be a blogger. And maybe someday I’ll be a sculptor, or a painter, or a burrito-maker. AND GUESS WHAT? THIS IS GOOD. THIS IS HOW IT SHOULD BE.

My mom put it best the other day. She said, “When Jesus was walking on the earth, if someone said to him, ‘What is it that you do, Jesus?’ what would he say? ‘Everything. I do everything.’” This is what we are supposed to be doing, as children of Light. Everything He is doing – and let me tell you, that does not fit in a box.

CHANGE THE WAY YOU THINK ABOUT YOURSELF

I AM A MUSICIAN.
I AM A WRITER.
I AM A SINGER.
I AM A GRAPHIC DESIGNER.
I AM AN ACTIVIST.
I AM A PHOTOGRAPHER.
I AM A BLOGGER.

I AM SUBJECT TO CHANGE.

Write your own version of the above sentence on a piece of paper, word doc, or the back of your hand. Recite it out loud. Feel it in your heart. You are subject to change. And that’s perfectly, perfectly okay.

  4. Abbie, after only reading this, I know you're one of the best writers, one of the best bloggers that exists. So take that (Truthful, might I add) comment, and choose to do with it what you want.
But I highly suggest you believe it. I'm not in the habit of wasting my time stating dishonesty.

Keep writing, and I'm definitely going to keep reading.

  14. OK so I know I commented on this page already, but since you updated it, I needed to comment again. *No shame here* :D

This post. I don't even know where to start. You completely put into words the deep feelings and thoughts that I haven't been able to express myself. I am a Junior in high school and haven't quite been able to make people understand what I mean when I say that I don't want to go to college...my talents are so that I can't pick only one thing to do, and I really don't have to go to college for them, either. I have never liked the OHMYGOODNESS YOU HAVE TO GO TO COLLEGE OR YOU WON'T HAVE A LIFE thing.
And honestly...I don't like academic things...I prefer the arts such as writing, culinary skills, and music. It's creating things that gets me going...learning (by experience) to do the things I love, and constantly expanding those skills as well as adding new ones. No college diploma is going to give me quite the satisfaction that finishing a project of my own imaginings will. :)
SO, that was kind of long-winded, but in short, THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH. I am sharing this if you don't mind..because it's that AMAZING. And you're AMAZING. Here is a heaping virtual plate of waffles (with all the whipped cream and deliciousness) for your enjoyment. :)

    1. MEGAN. I LITERALLY HAD TO WITHHOLD TEARS FROM GUSHING OUT OF MY EYEBALLS WHEN I READ YOUR COMMENT. OMG. *takes deep breaths* literally I read it yesterday and (was a bad girl for not replying right away!) but I just could not stop thinking about your words all day THEY MEANT SO SO MUCH TO ME. <3 like, wow my heart is so full it could burst is it bursting i think it already BURST.

So when I talk about this stuff and babble on about it and try to put it into words, my ultimate goal is the hope that maybe, just maybe, please Lord let this inspire somebody and like REALLY touch them and resonate with them and let them see it how I see it and GET IT. AND YOU GOT IT. AND BASICALLY THIS ENTIRE BEAUTIFUL COMMENT YOU LEFT HERE IS EXACTLY WHAT I PRAY FOR AND IT BLESSES ME SO MUCH TO KNOW THAT THIS INSPIRED YOU. (okay i'm actually going to respond to your actual comment in a minute hang on... XD)

I want you to know that I completely (completely!!) agree with you on college. I have absolutely nothing wrong with going to school and pursuing a degree, but I definitely do not think it is necessary for being successful in life. :) As an independent artist (who has no intention of going to college) I've learned that it's really not as scary as it seems! (Well sometimes it's a little intimidating...but the Lord helps me through tough times.) I always used to shy away from "the college question" and thought that if I responded to someone with "I'm not going to college" I would get disinterest. But, surprisingly, the more people I tell that I'm not in college and give them a brief overview of what I'm pursuing in music and other things, I find that most people are intrigued by something different/think it's possibly even cooler than going to school! IT REALLY SHOCKED ME when it first happened, then I got the same reaction again and again (AND I'M TOTALLY RAMBLING HERE SORRY but I felt like I should tell you this?? XD I should probably write a post about this in the future haha) Anyway I find it super interesting how people like to see other people pursuing their talents -- not everyone approves, of course, but most people think it's pretty impressive. :)

ANYWAY. YOU ARE AN AMAZING PERSON AND YOU ARE GOING TO DO AMAZING THINGS, MEGAN. ALWAYS ALWAYS BELIEVE IN YOURSELF AND BE BOLD AND BRAVE AND EXACTLY WHO YOU ARE. AND THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE WAFFLES. *devours unashamedly* *dries happy tears* *shrieks to infinity and beyond*

  16. This literally brought tears to my eyes with the realisation that my identity is not in

    ballet

    beauty

    smiling all the time

but that my identity is a child a God, and what I /do/ will change, but it should always be for His glory. You communicate so much freedom in this mission statement, that I CANNOT WAIT to see how this theme changes the world. People really need to hear this, because we are told that we are the one or two things that people most identify us as. I am the cheerful ballerina. My sister is the quiet author. My dad is the passionate crazy guy (my own words). Since I've started college, I've seen so many people lost in who they want to be because they feel like a degree defines them. The future lies ahead, and sometimes I feel that I have to predetermine the rest of my life.

IT IS FOR FREEDOM THAT CHRIST HAS SET US FREE!!! So let us use this freedom to do MANY things for the kindgom of God.

Man, I didn't know I was so passionate about this stuff. As it turns out, I'm passionate about many things.

But Abbiee, I am stoked about this mission statement. I'm gunna like tell all my friends about this crazy idea of being multitalented.

OMG. I'm so giddy right now I can't even speak coherently BUt! YOU GET THIS. YOU GET THIS. I AM SO HAPPY THAT YOU GET THIS. ♥ The common belief system of "you're only one thing" is such an epidemic, isn't it?! Like...especially in college. Which is SO SAD because college should be a place where young adults are learning and exploring all kinds of ways to express their Christ Love and Truth! WE SHOULD BE EXPLORERS, NOT SQUASHED INTO BOXES.

Oh my goodness, it makes me SO FHSDJALS;KD HAPPY THAT YOU ARE PASSIONATE ABOUT THIS TOO. <3 Like, this is the kind of response that I dream of and pray for -- that what I say will mean something and resonate with someone, even if it's just a few (and in this case I think it's many!) and that they will be inspired by it and OMG THAT JUST HAPPENED AND I'M INCREDIBLY BLESSED. <3 like, thank you thank you thank you!! *BIG HUGS*

  18. Hmm, I think I might have needed this. I'm definitely a person who is a jack of all trades. I dabble in pretty much anything that peaks my interest for the time being. It's kind of frustrating when things don't stick, though :P I have NO IDEA what I want to do when I grow up because EVERYTHING is interesting O.O Cooking, writing, reading, singing, drawing, computer programming, upholstery, ETC. It's exhausting and I mainly don't think about it :P

  19. Seriously, this is the best thing I have ever read. Can I just say again? I LOVE YOUR BLOG!!!!
Me? I tried college. 4 years, and the only thing I have to show for it is an associates degree, and $6000 worth of student loans. Choosing ONE thing is so hard! And honestly, how boring is one, when you can be five, or ten? Me? I'm a ten. Trying to squish ten traits of awesome into one itty-bitty box is difficult, and quite frankly, discouraging.
