How To Do LITERALLY EVERYTHING You Want To Do: The Secret BULLETPROOF LIFESTYLE Of A MULTITALENTED CREATIVE (Plus A FREE Cheat Sheet To Help You START CRUSHING Your Productivity Game!)

I always hate it when people tell me that I can't do everything. My default answer is: "WHY NOT?" Yes, I'm a bit of an over-committer and an over-achiever. Anybody who knows me also knows this. But that's not my problem, here. My REAL problem is: I have too many interests.

And I don't just mean hobbies or things I do for fun. I mean I COULD LITERALLY PICK LIKE A DOZEN DIFFERENT THINGS AND MAKE A CAREER OUT OF THEM AND NOT GET SICK OF DOING THEM. I like to call it being "multitalented." If you've been here for any amount of time you've probably heard me talk about this "multitalented" thing before – in fact, my entire mission statement page is devoted to this very topic. Why? BECAUSE IT IS CLOSE TO MY SMALL COLD HEART.

Here's the thing: I'm a multitalented person. I do lots of different things and a lot of those things I like EQUALLY. In fact, I like them so much, I could explore them forever and not get bored. For some, this might sound like a blessing. But it can also be a curse. Because us multitalented creatives have SO MANY THINGS on our plate, we often find it difficult (or even impossible) to find time to do EVERYTHING. It's like ordering a dozen appetizers instead of a main dish – YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT TO EAT FIRST AND SO YOU END UP EATING ALMOST NOTHING AT ALL.* You might get frustrated at your lack of direction. You might even get envious of the person next to you who is fully focused on That One Thing™ they want to do with their life. Why are they so sure of their desires and you're not sure of yours? Are you indecisive? Do you lack drive? Or purpose? Or simple regard for tRUTH AND CONSEQUENCE???? Let's find out.

*yes yes I realize that was a bad analogy but I HAD TO TALK ABOUT FOOD OK???

Some people are specialists. And some people are multitalents. One is not better than the other. EVERYONE IS DIFFERENT. Whether you're interested in specializing in That One Thing™ or you are interested in exploring LOTS OF THINGS, you're still a creative and passionate individual and THE WORLD NEEDS YOU. But today I'm speaking for the people like me – the people who feel called to take SEVERAL paths, not just one. Because in a world that is constantly yelling at us from all sides, "Pick a major!" "Choose a niche!" "Get a job!" IT CAN BE SUPER DISCOURAGING to be a multitalent. Sometimes we even feel like maybe we're not talented at all, because we don't excel at just one thing, and instead we're good at lots of things. THEREFORE WE ARE CONFUSED. WE DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO.

DON'T FALL FOR THIS TRAP. DON'T FIT YOURSELF INTO A BOX. I believe that multitalents need room to spread their wings and fly in whatever direction the wind takes them. MAYBE THIS IS YOU. Maybe you feel like you can't pin yourself down to just one thing. Maybe, like me, you've already realized that you want to take more than one path in life and you're beginning to feel like YOU CAN'T DO EVERYTHING. If so, this post is for you.

IT WILL BE HARD. IT WILL BE TRECHEROUS. YOU WILL WANT TO GIVE UP, RING THE BELL, GO HOME CRYING, ETC. BUT IT WILL BE WORTH IT. I PROMISE.* But before I get into divulging the secret bulletproof lifestyle that allows me to do ALL THE THINGS, I first want to tell you about my failed attempts to do all the things.

Once upon a time, I thought that the best way to be a multitalented creative was to spend a little bit of time each day working on EVERYTHING. Let's say I have ten different things I want to do; I spend ten hours of my day doing each one of those things. MAKES SENSE, RIGHT?? An hour of writing, an hour of practicing music, an hour of video editing, an hour of making waffles, etc....YOU GET THE IDEA. This might seem like a legit way to do things (and it might even work for some people!) but it didn't work for me. And here's why:

I work best when I binge-work – and by that I mean TAKE AN ENTIRE DAY TO DO NOTHING BUT THIS ONE PROJECT. A little bit at a time isn't really my thing – I've tried it and IT JUST DOESN'T WORK FOR ME. My friend Esther told me recently that this is probably because I lose momentum when I have to continually stop what I'm doing and move onto the next project. SHE'S 100% RIGHT.*So I've recently started doing things differently. I've started devoting a full day every week to each thing that I want to do. AND IT WORKS. IT WORKS INCREDIBLY WELL I AM FREAKED OUT AND I NEED TO SHARE IT WITH YOU.

*and no, it will not involve sleep-deprivation and going crazy and drinking your weight in coffee – in fact, this method involves NO COFFEE WHATSOEVER! YAY! Unless you want to bulletproof while you bulletproof you know what I'm saying hahaa if you don't know what I'm saying then google it hahaa.
**because she is wise and sage and awesome go follow herrrrr

I take one day and focus on one project. Such as writing. Let's say I have two chapters of my novel to write (in order to reach a goal, or something.) I'll do that on Monday. Then on Tuesday, I'll work on music – composing, practicing, recording, whatever. Wednesday is the day I spend working on a Top Secret Online Course Project™ with my dad (and if I have any time left, I squeeze in a bit of writing.) Thursday is either a music day or a writing day – depending on my current deadlines. Friday is the day I write, format, and schedule a blog post (ooooh behind the scenes look!) and sometimes also the day I film a video. On Saturday, I video edit and try to chill out...which is harder than it sounds (both of those things.) Sunday is the day I do ALL my social media management (such a scheduling tweets! for the entire week! haha!), answer blog comments, follow back my lovely blogger friends, and reply to emails. THEN THE WEEKLY CYCLE CONTINUES. ALONG WITH MY DOWNWARD SPIRAL INTO OBLIVIOUS INSANITY MUAHAHAHA.!

Friend, this works for me. This really TRULY works for me. I'm not saying it works for everyone, but...GIVE IT A TRY. You might be pleasantly surprised by the results! If you EVER say to yourself: "Ugh! I wish I had more time to do ____!" then I urge you to change the way you spend your time. You have nothing to lose by trying something new!!

WOOOOOOT YES YOU KNOW IT BRO. I'm super pumped about this. It's a literal cheat sheet! It's like a survey! It's fun! It involves waffles! All you have to do is print it and fill it out – and you'll be off to a great start on your multitalented journey. WE ALL NEED A LITTLE HELP GETTING STARTED, DON'T WE??? Well, that's what I'm here for. (I'm also here to shout my loud opinions into the void, but, you know...small details.) CLICK ON THIS IMAGE TO GET THE PRINTABLE:

What do you think? Are YOU a multitalent or a specialist?? BOTH ARE AWESOME BTW!! Do you ever wish you had more time to do the things you love to do? TRY THIS METHOD. I really think you'll like it. Are you going to print off that cheat sheet?? I hope so because if not: YOU'RE MISSING OUT. What are your talents? What are your interests? What are your goals?? LET'S TALK FOR GOODNESS SAKE.

rock on,
abbiee

  1. I feel like I'm also being pulled into many different things. I know God wants me to become a speaker, but also a writer. And I'm really into craft projects as well. And I worried that because I wasn't settling for one thing, I didn't have my life figured out right. But I've recently seen many things that have shown me I don't have to be one thing. I can do many and be the one person I'm made to be.

I love this post, Abbiee. Thank you!!

  3. Wow, this is awesome. It's super late, so my thoughts aren't really making sense, but yes. I'm on the multitalented side, and I know what you mean: it can be annoying. You enjoy so many things and wish you could devote all the time to everything. But there are positives, we mustn't forget.

I am going to try your method - I'm pretty confident it will work for me. The problem is my days and weeks are varied, so my schedule has to be flexible. But anyway, it's good to learn to get things done even when things are unpredictable.

I'm pretty sure anything I say from now on will be senseless, but thanks for sharing your awesomeness, and speaking from a multitalented perspective. It's so refreshing and encouraging to hear. xx

  8. "I mean I COULD LITERALLY PICK LIKE A DOZEN DIFFERENT THINGS AND MAKE A CAREER OUT OF THEM AND NOT GET SICK OF DOING THEM." << I'VE NEVER RELATED TO ANYTHING SO MUCH. I think that's kinda why I love writing though? I mean, I love dance, so I freelance for dance magazines. I'm interested in CrossFit, so I spent the summer writing for a CrossFit company. I'm fascinated by WWII, so I write lots of stories set in that time period. Writing is kind of like an outlet for all my other interests that I might not have the time or money to pursue the actual things! I just live vicariously through my characters ;)

  10. MULTITALENTED LIFE! I have had the mentality that I am a writer, and that is it, and all my other interests are just lil hobbies not to be minded. BUT NO MORE.
    I am a writer.
    I am a blogger.
    I am a musician.
    I am a travel-writer.
    I am an artist.

There's so many things that I want to try in my lifetime, and I don't have to cut that down just because it doesn't fit in with my "writer box". I'm excited to change my schedule around to accommodate more, and see how it works for me. :)

  11. This is why I love your blog, Abbie. I am definitely a multi-talented person. I always feel a little envious of those people who KNOW WHAT THEY WANT TO DO WITH THEIR LIVES. Because I don't. :P I have things I LOVE to do, and I certainly have long-cherished dreams and goals. But frequently I feel lost and "not good enough" because I don't desire college and I don't desire "that one career".

But then your blog comes along and tells me THAT'S OKAY and good even. Your posts always bring a smile to my face and help me remember that I'm not the only one in this boat--and it's a great boat to be in!! I just wanted to let you know that I think God is using you to encourage other people and I am definitely one of them. <3 <3 <3 THANK YOU, GIRL!!!!

  14. I really like this idea!! Do you have any tips for how to adapt it as a full-time student? I'm a high schooler, so I have school for most of the day and then I have homework to manage all the time. Is there a way I can still adapt this idea to work for me?

    1. Thank you so much, Grace! I'm so glad you can relate!! :) That's a really good question; I would probably say just be super realistic about your goals, if you know that you're going to be very occupied with school. Sometimes the going can be really slow when you're working on multiple things (I know from experience *nervous laughter*) but it definitely pays off to work on your goals slowly but surely! So even if you have less hours in the day to work on stuff you love to do, a little goes a long way. :) I hope that helps, and thank you so much for reading!! *hugs*

  18. WHY IS THIS SO GENIUS. *stares in awe* I really like bingeing on things too, like I definitely binge-write, but for me it's like 4 days of NONSTOP WRITING and then nothing else for a month.😂 But like I love how you've got different days of the week set up for things!! I love it! I am not really multitalented buuut it makes me sad that I don't really fit in enough stuff tbh. Like I used to love to play music but now I have NO TIME. I think I should start dedicating days for specific things.

  26. Definitely multitalented over here. And cursed. I so far haven't tried any creative endeavor that I subsequently failed at. It causes me to think that lots of people would be able to do certain things if they gave them enough time. Unfortunately with working full-time, I literally can't do everything I want to do. So I feel like I'm 'almost' there in so many different creative pursuits which frustrates me.

I'm always amazed that you are such an amazing blogger, youtuber, musician and vocal artist...I definitely can't boast that I have a ton of various talents, but I definitely am multiinterest. I've been trying to really decide who I want to be and what I wanna do and its just so difficult because I enjoy so many different things! This post helped me a lot in just feeling okay with the fact that I want to choose to go forward with the idea that I can pursue multiple interests (not just one)...I've really done this to start on my blog, so many people say to have a successful blog you need to find your niche and focus on one thing...but I've branched out and write about a lot of different things-its amazing because my blog really reflects who I am that way-a multi interest person ❤
