10 Stupid Blogging Myths That Most People Actually Believe

The blogging life is a mystical and dangerous adventure* that is often misunderstood. WHY? Because the majority of Earth’s population does not blog – YET THEY HAVE OPINIONS ABOUT BLOGGING. Or should I say myths. Here are ten of the very stupidest ones I know.

*jk jk it’s what we people who don’t like to leave our houses do to gain social stats and self-importance (don’t worry I speak for myself)

NO. PEOPLE WILL NOT FLOCK. PEOPLE DO NOT FLOCK. BIRDS OF THE AIR FLOCK. If you start a blog, it will sit in a small dark corner of the internet, unknown to the rest of the universe, until someone else knows that it exists. And how does someone else know that it exists?? YOU GO FLOCK* TO OTHER BLOGS AND LET THEM KNOW ABOUT YOUR EXISTENCE. It might sound tedious, but it’s the most tried and true method of all – organic interaction makes for organic friends and organic happiness. (Waffles are another form of organic happiness if the blog thing fails, just as a plan B.)

*like a bird of the air, YES

This one is humorous and infuriating at the same time. (Where is my angry-laughing emoji when I need it?????) Anyone who has had experience blogging will know this: BLOGGING IS HARD. That’s not to say it isn’t fun – because it is so much fun. But it’s no walk in the park, either. If you’re serious about writing good content, making it engaging and entertaining for your followers, and making your presence known online, THAT’S A LOT OF WORK.

For instance, I don’t consider myself a “serious blogger” – I love blogging and I try to keep this space fun and creative and interesting for you, my friend – but I’m not rabidly hungering for more popularity at this point in my life, nor am I posting more than once a week. THAT BEING SAID, I STILL SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON MY BLOG. I work long hours to make each blog post as fabulous as it can be. I SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THIS BLOG. So much so, my family worries for my mental health. But only occasionally.

FALSE FALSE FALSE. Unless you have a personal assistant to manage Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Snapchat, Pinterest, Tumblr, Google+, etc. AS WELL AS: follow blogs, reply to comments, make you waffles on demand, answer emails, carry the train of your royal cloak... MOST PEOPLE DON’T HAVE PERSONAL ASSISTANTS. Myself included (unfortunately.) Which means I do everything singlehandedly. Which means…I can only do so much.

I can only handle two social media platforms in addition to my blog: Instagram and Twitter. (Yeah, that was a shameless plug to say GO FOLLOW ME deal with it.) In addition to maintaining this blog, THAT’S ALL I CAN HANDLE.* And you know what? It works out really well. Because I pour all my energy into just two social media platforms, I’m able to post lots of good content. If I spread myself too thin, it sucks. < LIKE ANYTHING ELSE SPREAD THIN. LIKE JELLY. ON TOAST. WHO WANTS THINLY SPREAD JELLY ON TOAST, HMM? NOT ME, BRO.

*If you’re THAT PERSON who wants details: yes, I have a Facebook page but I almost ALWAYS forget to post on it. And of course I have a Pinterest, but it is purely for my own enjoyment/book inspiration/fandom stuff.

STUFF AND NONSENSE. I started this blog almost 7 years ago* and guess how great quality my writing was back then?? IT WASN’T. THERE YOU GO. You don’t need writing skills to blog. You DON’T EVEN NEED TO USE PROPER GRAMMAR. I MEAN LOOK HOWMUCH I ABUSE THAT HUH. Yet here you are, still reading this post. Because you love me and waffles and know you’ll never see the latter again if you don’t patronize the former with UNFALTERING LOYALTY. <3 aw I love u 2.

*wow I’m old *whips cane*

I don’t think I’ve ever found a strictly “unique” blog in my life. THEY ALL LOOK SOMEWHAT SIMILAR DO THEY NOT?? And a lot of bloggers write the same sort of content. Even if the world tells us “you are one of a kind!” and “you be you because that’s all you can be!” WE STILL FEEL LIKE WE’RE A CLONE OF THE NEXT BLOGGER, DON’T WE? I DO, MAN. Look, I use brush fonts and cute watercolor flower decorations and dividers. LOOK I USE GIFS AND PRETTY STOCK IMAGES OF DESKS THAT ARE CLEANER THAN MINE. In a sense, I’m TYPICAL. But I don’t think you'd use that word to describe my blog, WOULD YOU? …Would you?

MAYBE YOU WOULD IDK
It’s not about being vastly different from the blog to your right and the blog to your left. In fact, there are BENEFITS to being similar to blogs in your “genre,” so to speak. The quickest way to capture the attention of new readers is to show them something they're familiar with – so don’t go shaming your “basic” blog. It’s probably helping you out more than you know.

GIVE ME SOME STRAIGHT-UP LAUGHING EMOJIS BECAUSE THIS ONE IS JUST FUNNY. If you feel like you have nothing to say on your blog, JOIN THE CLUB. Because blogging is practically the art of making something to say out of NOTHING TO SAY. I do it every week. I’M DOING IT RIGHT NOW, IN FACT. We’re 1000 words into this post – how?? Because I took a short, fleeting thought process and jotted it down in a notebook and now I’m making it LONGER AND LONGER AND LONGER and you know you love me.

I’ve had some pretty swoon-worthy stuff happen to me as a blogger. I’m not one to flail about these things outright, but I will say this: I’ve had my blog shared by popular bloggers. I’ve gotten traffic from these sources. But I have never been BOMBARDED BY FAME. Because it doesn’t work like that.

If someone does a shoutout for you on their social media or blog, AWESOME. But don’t get your hopes up – because it’s probably not your claim to fame. Most people think all you need is a push in the right direction – an “influencer” to fangirl over your thing and then BOOM YOU ARE SUPERBLOGGER™ and probably moving into the house next to Oprah on Maui or something. Noooo, my friend. Don’t hold out for this. If it happens, great. But in the meantime, be your own influencer! The best kind of fame is earned.

WRONNNNNG. Let me tell you something that changed my life: the average human browsing the web will spend FOUR SECONDS on a website before deciding whether or not to stay. FOUR SECONDS YOU HAVE FOUR FREAKING SECONDS TO MAKE A LASTING IMPRESSION. Does someone have time to read a blog post in four seconds?? Nope. What about the TITLE of a blog post? If your titles are anywhere near as long as mine, probably not. This isn’t about content – this is about aesthetics.

No matter how hard we try not to, we will ALWAYS judge a book by its cover. Aesthetics = the way something looks. You want your blog to be aesthetically pleasing, yes. But is it IMPORTANT to you? Because the average person will come for the promise of good content and stay for…THE AESTHETICS. YEAH. Which further proves the point that you don’t have to be a good writer. You just have to keep your reader visually pleased.

I'm about to debunk the big one, my friend: The Niche™ – it’s practically a villain from a fantasy. It haunts me in my sleep every night. It’s the multi-talented creative’s NIGHTMARE: the idea that “you cannot be successful unless and until you have narrowed yourself down to ONE THING.” By most people’s standards, I will never be successful. Because I can’t narrow myself down. I can’t fit in a box! I’VE TRIED SO MANY TIMES. And look, am I failing? Hmm. I don’t think so.

I enjoy my blog and YOU, my friend, enjoy reading my posts, right? WHY ELSE ARE YOU HERE?* I know what I love to do: blog, make music, write books, and eat waffles. There is no clean-cut boxed-up “niche” for that. I HAVE NO NICHE. YET HERE I AM. This is not to say that niches aren’t good – because they are awesome! But only if they work for you. For example, if you’re a book blogger or a food blogger or an art blogger and you just want to stay within the borders of that particular topic… GREAT! I love all of those types of blogs and you can sleep soundly at night, knowing that you will ALWAYS have a niche audience who will follow you. But don’t limit yourself to labels if you feel the need to break free. THERE ARE NO RULES TO BLOGGING.

*OH YES FOR THE AESTHETICS lol how could I forget

FOR THE SAKE OF YOUR MOTHER AND YOUR PET GOLDFISH PLEASE DO NOT ADVERTISE ON YOUR BLOG. I mean, who am I to tell you what to do?* What I mean is this: advertising (in moderation) is fine. But if you’re looking to get rich off your blog, you might want to look elsewhere. In my Previous Blogging Life™** I did advertising. And it was more trouble than it was worth.

Of course, this depends on the blogger. I myself am particularly possessive of my blog space and don’t want anyone patronizing it – BUT MAYBE THAT’S JUST ME. If you’re seriously interested in advertising, go for it. But proceed with caution. This is NOT a mandatory blogging thing. NOT ALL BLOGS ADVERTISE. IT’S A MYTH. In case you forgot what this post was about.

*I obviously know nothing I’ve just spent the past 1600 words instructing you on how you ought to live your blogging life
**Which I’m not going to tell you about lololol it didn’t end well

Can you add to this list? What stupid blogging myths have YOU encountered? And are any of them actually true?? *GASP* Do you rebel against the clichés I’ve shouted about here? Let’s chat in the comments!

rock on,
abbiee

  1. This is my fifth year blogging (!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). I've learned a lot, and this is spot-on blogging advice, people! Don't worry about niches or advertising or flawless content. You are a writer, so write! Here's how I'm implementing similar lessons to these: http://thelittledecorator.blogspot.com/2017/06/what-blogging-will-look-like-in-college.html

  2. Yassss (waffle) queen!!! (Also, you are soooo not typical. There is no other Waffle Queen besides You, Your Royal Majesty (and if there is, well, let's just say there won't be for much longer because I am an unquestioningly loyal subject*que ominous music*))

ANYHowww... Returning to topic... I LOVED this post, and it is sooo true! Another myth that I hear commonly is that blogging friends aren't really friends(?????)! WUT. Excuse me while I go sift through the text messages and e-mails and social media posts I've gotten from my VERY REAL friends on the internet whom I've met through blogging... *throws glitter and tosses my purple mane rebelliously*

YOu m'dear, have seriously crushed all of these blogger myths to oblivion and I absolutely adore your content. BTW, speaking of aesthetics, how have you achieved such a glorious aesthetic?! I am seriously curious, because I crave the knowledge to make my blog beautiful. XD

SERIOUSLY??? They are my ONLY friends tbh. I've literally met the most AMAZING PEOPLE online. UGH PEOPLE DON'T UNDERSTAND IT MAKES ME SO ANGRY. I could write a whole blog post on that alone.... *row of upsidedown smile emojis*

AW OH MY GOSH THANK YOU SO MUCH :'''') THAT MEANS THE WORLD TO ME. Also, I don't really know about the aesthetic thing?? haha. I'm building it constantly, but as for a few tips... consistent color scheme and font is key! I've basically migrated over to using a white/coral/teal color scheme and basic serif fonts with a bit of bold sans-serif mixed in... it's really all up to the blogger! AND PFFT YOUR BLOG IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PLACES TO HANG OUT ON THE INTERNET SO SHHHH <33333333333

  17. Amen, yes, and hallelujah! You are the queen. I love this post. It made me laugh and it made me want to shout my approval from the mountaintops! I've been thinking about these blogging myths a lot too. I think in order to be successful and happy with your blog, you have to shove all thoughts of fame far away. Blogging doesn't make you insta-famous, and if that's what you're striving for, you'll never be content with blogging. Just focus on what you love to write about, because in twenty years, you'll be the one looking back and reading your old posts.

  20. #5 - for me, I always am torn directly in half between 'I'm too weird for anyone to relate remotely to me snd what I post on my blog' or 'my posts are pretty much mirrors of everyone else's'. It's such a strange feeling. But thank you for mentioning the niche thing, too. That's always been my problem...Who is my audience? I'm pretty sure I talk to the wall mostly :P

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. I CAN DEFINITELY RELATE TO THAT FEELING OF TALKING TO THE WALL LOLOLOL :''') you're not alone!! I'm so happy you can relate to this post! *hugs of solidarity*

  21. I TOTALLY agree! Blogging isn't all fun! We need more TIME or a PA because damn, I've been wishing I had a PA for the last month because all I do is read books, rant, and then dive into another completely skipping the "write review" part. Couldn't someone listen to me rant and write a coherent post with it? Is that too much to ask? *Sobs*

Honestly, holding two social media accounts became too much for me. And after almost a year, I deleted my Instagram account because I frankly did NOT have the time. I loved taking pictures and playing around but it wasn't giving me enough satisfaction in the end (because I hardly posted and I hate the new algorithm). I'm "trying" to be more social and go out so balancing all isn't working.

And I'm RIGHT ON WITH YOU ON THE NICHÉ POINT. I've been battling this since THE BEGINNING OF TIME (when I started the blog) on whether to stay true to only one topic or continue as I am (which is basically anything and everything). I love this, but I sometimes I still wonder if the other way would be better. Then I remember that I want this blog to encompass ALL of me and go "like hell I'm gonna conform" and basically trample over all my doubts :P

    GREAT post <3

(Also, I'm trying to comment with my WordPress blog's URL but it says "your openID credentials could not be verified." Any clue what that means?)

    1. WOW YES I CAN REALLY RELATE TO THAT LOL. :''') It's like...I can ramble on and on to my sister about the books I read and then it comes time to sit down and write a coherent review and I'm like.... LOL I GOT NOTHING. *headdesk* the struggle is real. I NEED A PA TOO MAN. *distant crying*

Social media can be tricky!! I definitely cannot handle more than two platforms. Even posting on Instagram is becoming really hard for me (probably just because I'm so picky about what I post and when I post it but whatever *nervous laughter*) SO I COMPLETELY GET YOU!!

I'M SO HAPPY YOU CAN RELATE TO THE NICHE (or lack thereof lol) THING. BECAUSE SAME SO MUCH SAME. *high fives* KEEP FOLLOWING YOUR HEART, BRO. Because, at the end of the day, if our blogs don't make us happy...WHAT GOOD ARE THEY. ;) eeeep I'm SO GLAD you liked this post!! 23. How has this child not commented on this post yet??? Anyways. RELATABLE. Blogging takes soooo much tine and work omg. Like I knew it would be hard, but not THIS HARD gah. And I think that content is really worth more than aesthetics (WHO IS THIS IMPOSTOR) but AESTHETICS ARE WHAT MAKE OR BREAK YOUR BLOG. I will follow 100% if your blog is aesthetic. I won't even look at your content if nothing's aesthetic. Buuuuuuut even if you blog is aesthetic, I may not continue following it if I get bored of the content. #oops

And I LOOOOOVE the unique blog thing you mentioned! If we're TOO unique, people might not be able to relate??? (But at the same time, if it's a carbon copy of another blog...) I think all blogs essentially are the same -- it's YOU who makes the difference because you have your own voice and personality (and aesthetic).

GREAT POST, ABBIEE!!! I would talk about more of the points you mentioned but this is already getting quite long. ;)

  25. Dude, yes. When I was just a Baby Blogger, I thought I would become world famous overnight because I was such as good write. HAHAHAHAHA NOPE.

So I can testify to the truth of that first one. And Number 2 goes right along with it - people don't come to you, YOU GO TO THEM and it is so much work!!!!

BASICALLY IT IRKS ME SO MUCH WHEN BLOGGERS ARE MADE FUN OF BECAUSE ONLY BORED SINGLE OLD LADIES WITH A MILLION CATS HAVE A BLOG!!!! Like, no. Cool people can blog too. Young people also. Who hate cats.

    Ahem.

Also so much yes to the "Be Unique!" one because I think all the Unique in the world has been preeeeeeetty much used up by now... :))) And the Niche thing is overrated, too.
