3 Simple Habits That Will Make You Feel Super Accomplished

You’re an accomplished person. YOU KNOW THIS. You do awesome stuff, day in and day out. But for some reason you don’t FEEL accomplished. < This is me OFTEN, my friend. Which is why I decided to figure out a solution.

I’m a bit of a workaholic. Ask anyone who knows me and they’ll tell you: ABBIE DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO TAKE A BREAK.* This is true. But why do I love working so much?? Because a) my line of work is fabulously fun, b) I want to have a successful career, and c) the more calories my brain burns, the more waffles I can eat. THAT BEING SAID, it’s depressing when I reach the end of a day and I feel like I didn’t accomplish anything.

PLEASE TELL ME I’M NOT ALONE. Do you ever have those days where you’re just like “omg another 24 hours to slog through I feel like I’m dreaming what do I have to accomplish today??? idk how about some Downton Abbey” << I CAN RELATE, MY FRIEND. So! I decided to create a foolproof way to feel accomplished (without even accomplishing THAT MUCH.) I’ve had much success with adopting these three simple habits and I sincerely hope you will too. LET’S GET STARTED.

*Unless it’s a Pinterest break in which case LOL BRING IT ON BABY

WAIT! If you just read that title and thought “ugh I’m not a list person” or “I’m not good at planning things” PLEASE HEAR ME OUT. I’ve made a lotttttt of lists in my short life (581329146 to be ambiguously exact) so I daresay I’m the List Authority™. If you don’t like making lists, you’re probably doing it wrong.

A SHORT LESSON IN PROPER LIST-MAKING:

- Start with a lined page of any size (I use a legal pad)

- Write the date at the top of the page and DRAW SOME FUN DOODLES WHILE UR AT IT

- Underestimate the amount of things you can do in one day (under-commitment is key! You can always add more tasks later!)

- Double space each item on your to-do list

- So you can easily add more tasks later ;)

- Break up tasks into individual “steps” and make each step an item (example: if you have to post on your blog, maybe divide it into three tasks: 1) write blog post, 2) edit photos for post, and 3) format and schedule post. < THIS IS WHAT I DO.)

- Write yourself an inspirational note/quote somewhere at the bottom/top/margins of your list (SUPER ENCOURAGING)

- Highlight/underline tasks that are THE MOST IMPORTANT for today

- Do those important tasks first

And last but not least, READ YOUR LIST AT THE END OF THE DAY. Once you start crossing things off, you should begin to feel accomplished. But how will you feel accomplished if you just toss your list in the trash when it’s done? YOU NEED EVIDENCE OF YOUR ACCOMPLISHMENTS. (Heck, you might even want to keep some of those old to-do lists and frame them on your wall. Because YOU ARE #ACCOMPLISHED)

I WOULD BE LOST WITHOUT LISTS. I love lists! I’ve already written 500 words of this blog posts JUST ABOUT LISTS. I am practically wedded to my lists. Without a pen and a legal pad, I am confused and hopeless. Lists are beautiful. Lists are glorious. GO MAKE A LIST.

WHY YOU SHOULD MAKE LISTS:
You can look back on your day and actually SEE what you have accomplished.

HEAR MY DRILL SERGEANT TRUMPET SOUNDING??* It’s time to get out of bed in the morning! I promise this will make you feel more accomplished. FORGET ABOUT SLEEP. WHO NEEDS SLEEP???** The science behind this is simple:

YOU GET UP EARLY =
YOU HAVE MORE HOURS IN YOUR DAY =
YOU GET MORE STUFF DONE

I obviously have no idea what time you get up in the morning, so do this math yourself: try getting up 30 minutes before you usually do. Then work your way up to an hour. Then two hours. For example, I usually wake up naturally at 7:00 in the morning. When I was writing my novel last year, I would get up at 4:30 A.M. and write. Because that’s just how I roll, yo. (Side note: some of my best writing happens when I am deliriously sleepy. BONUS.)

*Yeah I know drill sergeants don’t blow the trumpet but let’s not get caught up on little details ok
**sloths. that’s it.

WHY YOU SHOULD GET UP EARLY:
You get more hours in your day and therefore get more stuff done and therefore feel 10000x more accomplished.

When some self-important people (me) try to point out their own faults, a lot of them (me) will say: “I’m an overachiever.” (Also me.) I’M STILL WORKING ON THIS ONE, MY FRIEND. But it has helped me already. I like to overcommit AND overachieve. I like to pile things onto my proverbial plate and then ACHIEVE EVERYTHING and stand atop my mountain of crumpled-up task lists with an Abbiee flag* and scream victoriously. < but sadly this never happens. WHY? Because I overcommit.

It’s another simple equation: the more things you commit to, the less accomplished you feel when you don’t achieve EVERYTHING.

So how you do stop this vicious cycle? Simply DON’T COMMIT TO SO MUCH. I know, it’s hard. I KNOW. IT’S SO FREAKING HARD. But if you underestimate how much you can accomplish in one day, then you’ll feel GREAT about yourself when you exceed your own expectations. This works for me every time and I have a feeling it will work for you, too.

*Featuring the iconic emblem of a singing waffle, OBVIOUSLY, and available on my website for $10.99 plus shipping. (JUST KIDDING but if you actually want an Abbiee flag…wow I love you.)

WHY YOU SHOULD UNDERCOMMIT & OVERACHIEVE:
You will surprise yourself by exceeding expectations and instantly feel more accomplished.

This struggle is real and everyone deals with it at one time or another. DON’T LOSE HEART, MY FRIEND. If you don’t feel accomplished, that doesn’t necessarily mean that you aren’t accomplished. A bit of encouragement from yourself and few new habits might just do the trick. GIVE IT A TRY.

Can you add to this list? What makes YOU feel accomplished? I’m always looking for new healthy habits, my friend!! Do you get up early or sleep in late? Do you overcommit or undercommit?? And the most important question of all: DO YOU LIKE LISTS???? < plz say yes with the fire of a thousand suns.

rock on,
abbiee

  1. YAS. I have the nasty habit of writing waaay too many things on my To-Do list, so that when I look at it and I haven't finished everything on it, I decide that I was a FAILURE. I've got the waking up early down, but I for sure need to work on not overestimating my day. XD

    1. I HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM LAURA. :''') The struggle is so real. I almost always overcommit and it certainly does not help my sense of accomplishment. *nervous laughter* I'M SO GLAD YOU LIKE THIS POST. <3

  3. YES! Thank you Abbiee. I love 1 and 3... 2 is my enemy, I'm afraid. I've tried waking up early and making it a habit, but I'm such a zombie and I feel like killing everything, so I decided that, to spare the world from my wrath, I must sleep a little longer lol x)But I love writing lists for /everything/ literally. And I've discovered just recently that number 3 is very very helpful. I'm such an over achiever, and whenever I couldn't complete everything I'd feel like SUCH A fAIluRe. And it drove me crazy.

    But yea. Great post :))

  5. Great post! It's hard not to feel disappointed when you haven't accomplished much during the day. I usually sleep in late, especially since its summer. Yes! I adore lists! Even when they're lists of unimportant things, they are just wonderful.

  6. This is wise advice. I feel like I'm constantly in a state of accomplishing nothing, so I will try the last two. I already write lists (and I'm pretty sure I think in lists), but obviously I put too many tasks on them. Getting up at 4:30 though - how early did you go to bed?! My only tip for feeling accomplished would be: spend as little time possible on the internet. (As you can see, I'm taking my own advice right now.)

I like the graphics in this post too! You make them yourself, right?

Lists are amazing!! *high fives you* I'm so glad you agree. ;) I usually go to bed around 10 or 11-ish? *nervous laughter* so yeah, I probably don't get as much sleep as I should, but OH WELL. oh man, yes, the internet is definitely a big time-suck. UGH. AW, THANK YOU! Yes, I make all the graphics myself. :) I just found some new watercolor flowers to work with, so I've been having fun with that. <3 THANK YOU FOR READING!

  7. LISTSSSSSS LISTS ARE MY LIFE. I would seriously be dead if not for lists (especially this year, oh my lanta).

I too am an overcommitter/overachiever. It is a vicious cycle and I should probably stop one of these days...eventually.

My biggest thing that I do is lists. Another is trying to do all the things that I have to do first thing so I can get them out of the way and go do other stuff, fun stuff. Granted, I usually have more things added, or end up procrastinating anyway, but it's the thought that counts right??

    1. YAAAAAAAAS *HUGS YOU AND HIGH FIVES YOU AND GIVES YOU WAFFLES* KINDRED LIST SPIRIT < that's a thing now lol :') That's a really good method for productivity, Emily!! I try to do that, too...saving the fun stuff for later on in my day. But YES OMG I ALWAYS THINK OF MORE TASKS TO ADD TO MY LISTS. xD *nervous laughter* Thank you so much for reading!!

  8. What I do is make a goal and then achieve it. #winning

JUST KIDDING. But goals are super helpful to me. Also lists!!! Lists are amazing. But when I'm making a goal, sometimes I'll overcommit (like you said) and then just barely make it. ORRRR, I'll do a goal that I know will be easy to pass. Then I achieve that goal + some more and VOILA I FEEL ACCOMPLISHED IN LIFE AND EVERYTHING ELSE.

Can I have an Abbiee flag.

    may @ forever and everly

(Also, in your post you said one of your steps was editing photos for posts. SO ALL THE IMAGES IN THIS POST ARE YOURS??? Because holy cow if they are they are AESTHETIC AND BEAUTIFUL AND OMG.)

    1. THAT'S A GREAT WAY TO FEEL ACCOMPLISHED, MAY. ;) I highly approve!! Lists really are amazing, aren't they?? LIFE SAVING. Haha I'll have to make some Abbiee flags now... <3 AW THANK YOU. These photos (and a lot of the photos I use on my blog) are actually stock photos... because I'M NOT THAT AESTHETIC YET BUT SOMEDAY??? PERHAPS?? I do edit them and put filters on them and whatnot, though... :) Thank you so much for reading, dear!!

  13. AHHH YESS I TOTALLY DO THIS STUFF (except for #3). I am a List Queen and try to wake up earlier (though the key to that is also going to sleep earlier ;) But #3 I STRUGGLE WITH. Like, over committing is what I do, unfortunately. I'm really trying to get out of the habit this summer, but I feel so bad when I tell people "no, I can't. I have a lot I need to do." But then my mom tells me that it's good I'm taking care of myself so I feel a little better XP

  14. AHH I CAN CONFIRM FOR HABIT #2!! It's such an amazing feeling when I check the clock and think... "Wow, I'm an hour ahead of my work for today!" <3

And please don't even mention me with lists?! I have a planner and calendar duo and I am so excited to rock the year with my intense organization! (Or at least I hope, haha!)

  16. AHHHH- THIS POST GAVE ME SO MUCH INSPIRATION, I RAN UPSTAIRS (i don't run) AND GRABBED A NOTEBOOK AND PEN AND BEGAN MAKING A LIST.

This post was exactly what I needed to hear. <3 Also, it contained so much of ME that I am now convinced we are the same person. Or, at least, you're the person I strive to be.

I make lists, but I should probably stay more committed to it. I've been waking up earlier than usual, but I need to start prioritizing. I mean, I try to but I tend to get overwhelmed and I'm just like: "MUST ATTACK ALL THE TASKS RIGHT THIS SECOND OR ELSE THE WORLD IS GOING TO END!" o-o

Anywho. Fabulous post, dear. <3 Keep up the great work, and I'll be expecting an Abbiee flag shortly. ;)

  17. Ummm... I WANT AN ABBIEE FLAG?!!! Seriously, I have MISSED READING YOUR BLOG SO MUCH! But I'm making blogging a priority now *checks off another thing on my list* and ditching some of the time on social media. So worth it. (-: YASSSSS 2 all the lists. Lists are life. I don't know how I would've gotten through community college without all the lists. And adding in stuff after makes me feel so much more productive. I feel like enjoying the thing I'm doing in the moment and making the most of it helps me feel that way too. It's just more... satisfying that way, ya know?
    Lots of <3 <3 <3!
