How To Find Time To Do The Stuff You Actually Like To Do But Have No Time To Do

If you clicked on this post out of despairing desperation then my fren, you are a lot like me. HI. Let’s hop on the next ship to Antarctica and be sad together. OR MAYBE WE SHOULD – idk – TRY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM INSTEAD?? There are only so many hours in a day.* And within the small span of time we are given in a day, there seems to be NO TIME EVER to do the fun things. This was an ongoing struggle for me until the day I realized “THERE MUST BE A WAY TO CREATE MORE TIME.” Because nothing is impossible, right??**

First let me clarify a few things: A HAVE A STRANGE LIFE. It’s strangely awesome, of course. But I understand that not everyone works from home on their family’s business while simultaneously working on their future career as a writer and a musician (with a blog – bonus!) I AM VERY VERY BLESSED. But even though I don’t have a “normal job” and I don’t go to college, I am still an incredibly busy human. I never really have “free time” because I can ALWAYS find something that needs to be done, cram it into my day, then crash for the night with an exhausted brain and body. BUT DID YOU SEE WHAT I JUST SAID?? IT’S A CLUE TO SOLVING THIS PROBLEM. Let’s get on.

*25 to be exact. I counted one time. Right after I failed math.
** UNQUESTIONABLY. It’s scriptural. Woooo.

The answer to this question will be a little different for everyone. Which is why I’m only going to share my experiences with this – because as I said before, I have a strangely flexible but deceptively busy lifestyle. But if you’re serious about making more time for funsies, you’re going to have to face this question. Because it might not be JUST WORK that’s keeping you occupied. SURPRISE.

The hustle is challenging, but it is also addictive. Sometimes we get roped into spending our time doing things that aren’t necessary to our careers, our happiness, or LIFE ON PLANET EARTH. I’m not saying this is you – I’m just saying…keep an eye out. Take note of where EXACTLY your time is going.

Maybe you want to read more books. Maybe you want to spend more time with your family and friends. Maybe you want to study neuroscience because WHY NOT.* Chances are, you want to do more than one thing. So now what??

• Make a list of all the things you have no time to do.
• Rank those things based on what you want to do THE MOST.
• Start by making time for the first one.

This might seem stupidly obvious, but it kind of wasn’t for me. I was like, “OMG I COULD PRIORITIZE THIS” and my life was forever changed. Priority lists might actually be my favorite thing now.

*Me, actually. I know I’m weird. But you love me.

Your task list is never done until you cross off: “Have fun!” ISN’T THAT CUTE OMG I THOUGHT OF IT MYSELF. Cheesy phrases aside, it’s true. I’ve had some experience of crossing off task lists. I’m a bit of an over-committer and an over-achiever, so I believed for a time that a crossed-off task list would make me feel accomplished – I was wrong. By observing my thoughts and emotions day by day, I’ve discovered that if I don’t do something that brings me joy, I feel like a failure. PLAIN AND SIMPLE. Happiness is the ONE THING that puts me in a good mood. IRONIC, RIGHT.

The thing you don’t have time to do might be the very thing your soul needs right now. So don’t ever ever EVER feel guilty for doing something that brings you happiness and satisfaction. Time you enjoy wasting is not wasted time.*

*I stole that from somewhere. But if yoU WANT TO BELIEVE I AM WISE AND SAGACIOUS, GO AHEAD BRO.

Only YOU can figure out what’s best for your lifestyle.* DO YOUR HOMEWORK, BRO. But if you need some real life example to follow, this is how I managed to create time to do the stuff I actually like to do but had no time to do. And it wasn’t easy. It took (and continues to take, let’s be real) focus, effort, and self-control. I don’t know how versed I am in any of those things, but I MUDDLE THROUGH. And I’m sure you can, too.

At the beginning of the year, I made this one of my resolutions and SURPRISE I HAVE ACTUALLY KEPT IT: say goodbye to the internet and my task list at 6pm every night. In short, PUNCH OUT. I’ve always been more of an early birdie than a night owl. Most of my inspiration and motivation attack me in the morning hours. That means evening is my favorite time to chill. But my sister, for example, is just the opposite. She loves slow mornings and seems to be the most inspired (and wired) at night. SO IT’S DIFFERENT FOR EVERYONE. Find a time that works well for you, and be okay with saying, “my day is done.”

We all know it: SOCIAL MEDIA WILL SWALLOW YOUR LIFE, YOUR GOLDFISH, AND YOUR MOTHER’S COUSIN’S FIRST CHILD IF YOU DON’T WATCH OUT. There is something so blissful about ignoring the woes of life and scrolling through our Instagram feeds – but the enjoyment is only short-lived and pretty soon we realize that our day is gone and WE HAVE DONE IT AGAIN WE ARE THE WORST FALURES EVER. OR MAYBE THE BEST FAILURES EVER?? WHATEVER. WE ARE FAILURES.

Social media is fun and helpful and essential to some careers – but only at very specific times. I’ve been discovering in myself that if I were to rake together all the minutes I spend scrolling through Twitter and Instagram in a given day, BOOM THERE’S THAT CHUNK OF TIME I WAS CRYING ABOUT NOT HAVING. I actually do have that time. I’m just scattering it about in all the wrong places and making myself sad. NOT A GOOD PLAN.

Sometimes, when I feel like a have a particularly busy day ahead of me, I propel myself forward with a challenge: let’s see how fast I can get everything done and I’ll have that much time left over for fun stuff! THIS IS CALLED BEAST MODE. And you could totally do this instead of punching out at a specific time but I prefer to punch out just because I’ve got a rap sheet filled with “ABBIE STAYED UP WORKING AGAIN” so sometimes I need to be controlled with force.** But it all depends on your personality. Move and work in a way that best serves you. Don’t worry. Be happy.

*…and prevent forest fires but that’s a whole other topic right.
**DON’T BE SCARED. I promise I’m only dark and terrifying at heart. Like a cupcake with a surprise (razorblade) inside.

Are you struggling to find time to do the things you actually like to do? Have you tried creating time for those things instead of just WHINING ABOUT IT?? Oops, here comes my Drill Sargent side. Do you have a particular time when you “punch out” of your task lists and distractions? DO SHARE WITH ME, Y’ALL.

love,
abbiee

  1. Oh wow, yes, I completely identify with this post. Especially the social media. *cough* And... staying up late is definitely a problem; I have a pretty impressive record of being up past 11:30 for one reason or other. :/ The things I mainly want to make time for are reading and emailing friends (which, ironically, are always on my to-do list and almost never get checked off >.<).

    1. THE SOCIAL MEDIA STRUGGLE IS REAL, BRO. :') Ugh, yes, I've been staying up pretty late too. My mom always warns me that it's not healthy but I don't listen until I get sick lol #help xD I've been trying to make more time for reading, too! Thank you for commenting! <3

  2. Agh, I totally agree, especially with social media, except for me, I have no social media, so it's more like random blog-related stuff. XD Ooh, I need to try "punching out". I've set a goal to get off all electronics by 8:30, but I think that's too late... I end up staying on electronics past it anyways. XD Thank you for this wonderful post, Abbiee! It will definitely come in handy. ;)

Mmm yes I've heard it's healthy to get off electronics after a certain time before bed...supposedly the lights keep you awake?? idk it definitely seems possible. EEP THANK YOU FOR READING MAY EVERLY <3

  3. Hey, it sounds like we have a very similar situation. I too help out at home with my family's business (farming) for a job and work on being a writer for a career. I do college courses online but have no plans to actually attend a college in the future, so I totally understand the "flexible time but still busy time". It is super weird and I'm glad I'm not the only one suffering it! This was a great post though, you have some fantastical thoughts here - thanks for sharing!

My bosses (parents lol) work me hard but it's so nice to stay at home. :) YES THE STRUGGLE IS REAL OMG. I'm glad I'm not the only one too!! It is definitely weird having such a flexible but busy schedule. *upsidedown smile emojis lololol* and also not the only one who isn't attending college! *moar high fives* THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING EMILY!!

    2. Being able to go to work (mostly) whenever I feel like it and not having to drive into the city and waste gas is pretty great. Also, I'll never get fired! XD
Do you ever get the feeling that people think you're super lazy for not having an "official job" or attending school? Or is that just me? :P

  4. I'm the worst at time management--college does help give some structure to my day, but once I'm out on break it's pretty much let's-see-how-much-I-won't-do-while-whining-that-I-never-have-time-to-do-anything. I've been trying to get more organized this year, though. Having a punch-out time would definitely help. Neat post. :)

  7. Oookay but WAIT. What do you mean "Have you tried creating time for those things instead of just WHINING ABOUT IT??" Like THAT DOESN'T WORK???? I HAVE BEEN LIED TO???
    hehe just kidding.πŸ˜‚
I think these are fabulous tips! And I'm a lot like you, actually, with working from home but like not fully supporting myself yet (I don't know if you are or not for that part haha) and focusing a LOT on my writing to hopefully launch a career in that someday soon. *nods* And like it feels like I should have all this time but I DON'T. I sometimes get to 10pm and realise I haven't even had a chance to read yet. 😭 I don't even know where my time goes tbh (although up keeping a blog does eat it). One thing I like to do to make more time is skip watching TV/movies and also, yes! Limit social media. I don't have a specific clock out time, but I don't let myself scroll endlessly through pinterest or anything unless it's at the very end of the day.πŸ˜‰ I think finding time is a lot about making sacrifices, too, and prioritising for sure!!

but hey. Why do you get 25 hours. I want 25 hours. SHARE???

    1. I KNOW RIGHT IT'S NOT FAIR. Why can't we just petition the earth to stop moving for a few hours and give us some more time??? (NOT LIKE THIS WOULD ACTUALLY WORK BECAUSE GIVING ME MORE TIME WOULD PLUNGE AUSTRALIA INTO DARKNESS MUAHAHa... my plan has failed.) YES YOUR LIFESTYLE SOUNDS A LOT LIKE MINE ACTUALLY LOL. I'm definitely not fully supporting myself (but my parents like me for some reason?? so it's all good for now mauhahaa) and I CAN RELATE TO HAVING SO LITTLE TIME when it feels like you should have much more. That's what confused me so much about this subject!! Because I love what I do so my hours get siphoned away like that. WHERE DID THEY GO??? ugh. But you're so right -- in the end we do have to sacrifice some things to make time/room for other things. *nod nod* right on! EEP THANK YOU FOR READING DUDE <3 and hehe NOPE THAT 25TH HOUR IS ALL MINE *EVIL LAUGHTER*

^ That is legit the truth. For me, it really does boil down to unplugging from social media as much as I can. Minutes wasted here and there add up until suddenly hours and days and months and ENTIRE YEARS have been devoted to Facebook and the like, EGAD. I like the idea of prioritizing those fun things that never get done! And I think going to bed earlier and waking up earlier have also helped me. Rad post, yo!

  16. Thou knowest mine struggles. I've been told the whole 'if you want to do something bad enough, make time to do it' thing too many times in my life, but it still doesn't seem to make much difference...or I go back to the whole 'have you done enough work to earn the privilege of doing something fun?'

I'm one of those people who doesn't have a strict job, and in a way, that makes me feel guilty because I aught to work the same amount of hours per week as a typical person...which doesn't make sense (Except that I am too afraid people will think I'm a lazy bum or that I'm not doing anything with my life). But then I also have the issue of defining 'work'. Writing is something I am very serious about, but I can't get myself to view it as 'work' which is sad because if it's God's work for me, then I'm doing something wrong by viewing it as less important...I don't know if I think 'work' is when I'm doing something I don't enjoy? But that isn't necessarily true since most of the time I'm happiest while I'm working...and this could go on and on...

    Good post!

HAHA YES IT REALLY COULD GO ON AND ON. But I know exactly what you mean. *sighs heavily* LIFE IS COMPLICATED ISN'T IT. thank you so much for reading!!

  18. I'd lend you my magical time machine but I LOST IT AND WHAT SHALL I EVER DO NOW? *passes out quite dramatically*.

Ahem, anyways. YES time is so hard to find! (and social media is definitely one of the biggest distractions, ugh) But also YES I have tried to make the time instead of whining about it (HAHA) - I get up earlier in the morning to write, and put other things aside to ALSO WRITE. My fingers are about to fall off. But HEY if it makes it so I can (possibly) try and get my book published next year, it'll be worth it xD.

OH MY GOODNESS I'm not the only one who goes into "beast" mode?! *highfives you* I do that so often with my school - the strange and insane part of my brain wakes up and says "LET'S FINISH A MONTH OF SCHOOL IN ONE DAY, GOOD IDEA?". I can't decide whether this is a problem or not xD.

Anyways - thank you for this post and it was quite fun to read ;).

I was moaning and bewailing the fact that after today, I have to BUCKLE DOWN AND WORK because a)college, b)jobs c)my future life and the future life of posterity rests on my shoulders, and I REALLY JUST WANT TO WRITE NOVELS, LEARN KOREAN, AND START AN INDIE BAND FOR GOODNESS SAKE. So yes. This came just when I needed it. Starting now, social media moves over so I can type out a couple hundred words for my WIP during lunch, and I go into BEAST MODE at 6:00 A.M. because bruh, YOU ARE SO DARN RIGHT ABOUT A DAY NOT BEING SUCCESSFUL UNLESS YOU DO SOMETHING THAT BRINGS YOU JOY!
