7 Reasons Why You Should Learn To Play A Musical Instrument

As a lot of y’all probably know by now, I’m kind of a musician. I’ve played the piano for over thirteen years, I’m currently learning to play guitar, and I compose my own music.* I LOVE MUSIC LIKE MY OWN SOUL so today I think we should give music some appreciation. Also I’m totally going to bribe you into learning an instrument by the time this post is over. But of course you need some very good reasons WHY EXACTLY you should pick up a musical instrument and learn how to play it. What fabulous timing, I just came up with a fabulous list.

*I do all this because IT IS SO MUCH FUN TO ME and I love it – but I am well aware that there are so many musicians out there who are much better than me. SO PLEASE DON’T THINK I’M BRAGGING. I KNOW MY PLACE, YO.

More than any of the other benefits to music I DO IT BECAUSE IT’S FUN. But let me just say: when I first started playing piano it was not fun for me. Yes, I was an impressionable six-year-old. Yes, my teacher was so much better than me. I would get very downcast at times and wail forlornly: “I’LL NEVER BE ABLE TO PLAY PIANO LIKE SHE DOES.” But guess what?? I STUCK WITH IT AND NOW I CANNOT IMAGINE MY LIFE WITHOUT MUSIC. It took a few years for me to find the fun in piano. But when I did there was no turning back.*

*ROLL CREDITS

THIS IS ACTUALLY A GIF OF ME WHEN I FIRST LEARNED PIANO.

Just like singing, knowing how to play an instrument is something to feel confident about. Maybe you can’t play EVERY SONG EVER, but tbh who can?? Even if you just know one song but can play it really well – THAT’S SOMETHING TO BE PROUD OF, SIR. Now you can sit down with your instrument (or stand up I guess LOOK AT ME BEING ALL RACIST AND THINKING ABOUT ONLY THE PIANO) and feel some level of confidence as you play that song and rock onnnn.

PLAYING AN INSTRUMENT IS HARD. Who said it was going to be easy?? Oh right, that YouTube tutorial you watched where SOME REALLY SEASONED MUSICIAN WAS PLAYING SOME REALLY COMPLICATED SONG. Music is not as easy as it looks. We try to make it look easy but TBH A HURRICANE IS GOING ON IN OUR HEADS. It requires tons of concentration and hand-eye coordination. It’s not as simple as eating a waffle. But if you persevere through the challenge, it can be ALMOST as rewarding as eating a waffle.

I don’t know about y’all, but I KIND OF HAVE THE MEMORY OF A SEA SLUG?? I can barely remember what this post is about, never mind what my middle name is. I’m probably not a very good testimony to this point BUT! I will have you know that my muscle memory is remarkable. I can COMPLETELY FORGET the notes to a song, but remember it by simply closing my eyes and playing the piano where it feels right. (This has literally happened to me on more than one occasion. IT’S KIND OF FREAKING CREEPY BUT HEY IT WORKS.)

YOU KNOW HOW ANNOYING I AM ABOUT SCIENTIFIC STATISTICS AND SUCH?? Well I’m about to throw one in your face. It has been scientifically proven that learning a musical instrument MAKES YOU SMARTER. So who doesn’t want to be smarter??? When you’re playing an instrument you are creating “a harmony of brain waves that synthesize beautifully for the most optimal brain usage possible.” IDK ABOUT YOU BUT THAT SOUNDS PRETTY GREAT TO ME. In fact, learning an instrument is arguably better than learning a new language. GIVE ME MUSIC OVER TALKING ANY DAY.  Because, as you know, talking is not the easiest thing in the world for me.

STRESS IS A PROBLEM, SIR. For me and you and probably every person on the planet?? DO YOU EVEN REALIZE HOW MUCH BETTER THE WORLD WOULD BE IF WE ALL DIDN’T GET SO STRESSED OUT??* Obviously we need more music in our lives. You don’t even NEED science to back this up but here you go. Music is tranquility. Music is love. Music is world peace.

Even if you’re not a composer of music, you are creating beauty by playing an instrument! YOU ARE MAKING BEAUTIFUL SOUNDS, OK?? And the world needs more beautiful things. So keep being awesome and rock on and I have nothing inspirational left to say so LOL GOODBYE MY FRENS GO LEARN HOW TO PLAY AN INSTRUMENT OK DO IT FOR ME DO IT FOR YOUR MOTHER DO IT FOR HUMANITY.

Do you play a musical instrument? Do you want to at some point in your life but decided to procrastinate (or Pinterest) instead? IT’S NEVER TOO LATE TO START, MY FRENS. What is your favorite instrument of all time?

love,
abbiee

  3. Gahhhh yes. I love the piano and have been playing for a long time, and I also sing mess around with guitar. I LOVE MUSIC. And recently I've been getting really deep into piano and have been wanting to play allll the arrangements. In good time, sir.

Your list is totally spot-on. :D Another reason: YOU FEEL REALLY ACCOMPLISHED WHEN YOU LEARN SOMETHING. Like, if you don't compare. I just moved, so I don't have a piano teacher even though I really really want to keep being taught. In the past, lots of my motivation to play piano came from a teacher's expectations. So I just printed out a brand new piece of sheet music, sat down, and learned it. And it felt really accomplishing. (and the piece was beautiful. Not the most challenging, but it still felt so good to learn it. River Flows In You by Yiruma. GO LISTEN TO IT.)

So basically yes to this post. Your genius should be screamed across the universe, along with many other fabulous bloggers'. ;)

(and ugh abbiee you just opened my eyes. the world this world would be without stress. goodbye while I go cry forever just wishing for that world.)

    1. PIANO = LOVE. It is just so beautiful. :') YAAAS I AM BASICALLY WHERE U AT WITH MUSIC. I wish I devoted more time to practicing but I always get busy with other things. (#adulting) I can totally understand about satisfying teachers' expectations. *nod nod* I feel like that happens to me as well. BUT YES SO TRUE IT MAKES YOU FEEL SO ACCOMPLISHED TO LEARN SOMETHING. Oooh I'll definitely look up that song!! It sounds lovely.

OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH. :'''') You are too kind to me. <333 and YES LET US PRAY FOR A WORLD WITHOUT STRESS. It would be amazing.

  4. I took violin lessons for an embarrassingly short time around the first or second grade. I love music, and I am a little jealous of people who can play instruments...but let's just say that it wasn't for me. Cool post, though. It ALMOST had me convinced to try again . :)

    1. VIOLIN LOOKS SO HARD. But I kind of really want to learn it?? idk I need someone/something to convince me. xD YAY I'M GLAD I ALMOST CONVINCED YOU TO TRY IT AGAIN. ;) But I can understand. Sometimes playing instruments just isn't our thing. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING.

  5. I kinda-ish play a music instrument XD. My younger sister plays both violin and piano really well, so she's been teaching me. But I'm a flighty student, and so sometimes we'll go, like ... a month before I have a lesson xD. BUT YOU HAVE INSPIRED ME TO START UP AGAIN. Great post, Abbie!

ALSO, since we're on the topic of music, I LOVE LOVE LOVE your mirror girl song. Like, SO MUCH. You did AH-MAZING on it and I can't get over it. JOB WELL DONE, ABBIE. I am addicted to that song *nodnod* *is listening to it right now*.

    1. ISN'T THAT THE STRANGEST THING EVER?? IDK HOW IT EVEN WORK BUT OK. xD Guitar is fun! But it really hurts the fingers at first. :') BUT IT'S WORTH IT I THINK. Also that's really cool that your dad plays guitar! None of my family plays musical instruments but I wish they did because it would be neat to hear live music and not always be the one playing it. xD

  8. Piano! Piano is probs my favorite instrument! That's the one instrument I've learned to play, which I've since forgotten. I love how it sounds when people can play it who know how. Especially at the beginning id good slow country songs! That's the best! I also like cello. (That's how you spell that, roight?)

  9. YES YES I LOVE MUSIC SO MUCH IT IS ACTUALLY THE BEST THING OF EVER.😍 I started piano when I was 12 and violin when I was 13 and then cello at 16. Although, confession *clears throat awkwardly* I don't play anymore. I mean, I do get on the piano occasionally??? I love it, but I struggle to find time to do everything. And I'm not taking lessons or preforming anymore so I don't really practise. haha. BUT ANYWAY. I do want to change that because MUSIC.😍 And I miss it. It is totally like learning a new language!! I was lucky in that I learned treble and bass at the same time because of the piano....and then going into the cello was easy because I could already read bass clef. But what do they not tell you about the cello? OH JUST THAT IT READS IN 3 CLEFS. So I had force my little brain to play in bass, treble, and tenor...sometimes all in one song. I'm pretty extra sure this is why I'm a deranged little cuckoo clock. #legit πŸ˜‚
Also music is a great stress relief AGREED. And I'd like to think it made me smarter but I sit there playing the Pirates of the Caribbean Kraken song which isn't exactly genius SO. I'll just pretend it makes me smarter. ;)

And I can totally understand about struggling to find the time for music. SAME BRO. :') I need to devote more time to it because I GET SO DISTRACTED WITH OTHER THINGS UGH. omg I didn't know that about cello?? THAT SOUNDS SUPER CONFUSING. Maybe I shall traverse the dark scary forests of cello someday...ahem. SOMEDAY IN THE FUTURE. ;)

  12. I play the piano, guitar, and some cello. It's all a work in progress, really, since the only lessons I have had are in piano, and that was only like five lessons, maybe? Thankfully, I've found some pretty awesome piano books that are somewhat simplified to make people like me think we know how to play the piano. I love, love Jazz (Blues, Boogey, Ragtime, etc.) and anything Baroque for the piano. Any music that makes me sound less awful is pretty much awesome with guitar and cello.

And yes, music is definitely a major stress relief for me, too. And creating beauty :)

Especially when it comes to accountability. xD THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING DEAR.

  15. This whole list is magnificent. I have always been interested in music. Once I feel the itch for a challenge, I learn a new instrument. Because of this odd hobby, I play the drumset, guitar, piano and ukulele. The ukulele is the cutest, easiest instrument I've ever learned how to play, and I would recommend it to anyone. Love this little blog of yours! ♥

  16. Yes! I agree with this post very much. Sometimes people don't want to learn an instrument because they don't think they're musical, and that's one thing I will actually rant out loud about - like, if you appreciate music, if you can tell the difference between sounds, then you are musical, and go learn an instrument. So yes, obviously I felt a need to tell you that as proof that I think this post is on point.

And one more reason to add to your list, is that music is powerful, so powerful. It transcends language and cultural barriers, and speaks where nothing else can. I can't think about the power of music without thinking of this quote: Not everything has a name. Some things lead us into a realm beyond words… ― Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn

And, I have to tell you this: your music is impacting people. Seriously, ever since I listened to your song 'You Only Die Once' the lyrics have been swirling in my head, because I know it's true that He conquered death once and for all, but I kind of couldn't quite get my head around it... until just recently when I was thinking about the resurrection, and it all fitted together so powerfully. (I just wrote a post about it, if this explanation fails to make sense.) So, thank-you, and keep changing the world through your talents, girl! xx

P.S. I had a question for you...How do you go about your blogging process? I noticed you have a lot of images, GIFs, pretty clipart, and BEAUTIFUL text thingys (!!!). So I was wondering, how do you manage it all? Do you have one day a week where you write up blog posts? Do you write them up, then publish them, or wait a little bit for editing, etc? Do you already have things like "Have Fun" written up beforehand?
Sorry, I'm asking sooo many questions, I know. But I'm just so happy I found your blog, you're absolutely amazing (!!!) at blogging, and I have a feeling you could really provide me with some helpful tips.
Thanks, girl! *blows kisses* *hands you a plate of homemade waffles*

okay so like there was a time in middleschool where I literally thought that I just 'wasn't a music person' because I hated taking piano lessons so I quit and I thought I was just challenged. but it was mostly the way I was learning because a few years later I picked up guitar just for fun and then a few years later the banjo just for fun and now there's like seventy shows a year on my plate like hello. and even if there wasn't a single show I would still spend hours a day with my best friends because hello STRESS RELIVING and FUN and CAN SOMEONE SAY FUN AGAIN?
also you're one of my favorite bloggers ok bye
