What Am I Writing For NaNoWriMo? (A Butchered Beautiful Books Linkup + Q&A You Never Asked For)

GOODMORNING PEOPLE OF EARTH.* Since NaNoWriMo is only 5 days away (WAAAAHT) I figured now would be a good time to blab all about the novel I’m going to write in the month of November! (BECAUSE OF COURSE YOU ALL WANT TO HEAR ABOUT IT.) Today I am completely butchering the Beautiful Books linkup (as in I’m only answering the questions I want to answer. MUAHAHHA.) I’m also going to ask myself some very important questions** because it’s natural for me to talk to myself all day every day.

PLEASE NOTE: I am not actually signing up to the NaNoWriMo website (because I am a cryptic ghost) but I still intend to carry out the challenge of writing a novel in one month! If you’d like to flail with me, hit me up on social media/my blog!! ;)

*or whatever planet you’re from. be not offended, extra-terrestrials.
**totally stole this idea from cait. i am a pirate but i’m a grateful and nice one i promise. arrrg.

This novel is actually a companion book/spinoff from Port Orange, the other book I recently finished writing. In Port Orange, there is a supporting character named Bobbi. (Okay, okay, she’s MORE than just a supporting character – she’s a big part of the story/love triangle/messy complicated plot.) My sister (the one and only Kate Emmons) and I were sitting at the table one day, talking about Port Orange. Kate suddenly turned to me and said, “You should write a book about Bobbi. She’s such an interesting character!” And let me tell you, my frens: when the one and only Kate Emmons gives you a book idea, YOU RUN WTH IT. All this to say that I basically can’t take any credit for this idea – I stole it from my sister. GLORIOUS STORY, RIGHT BRO??

The majority of the book takes place on an apricot farm. Rows and rows of green trees. Sunlight everywhere. A whitewashed farmhouse. Laughter and bonfires and paint-covered hands. Staying up all night, but not for a party. Forgetting the darkness. Embracing the light. Seeing things in ways we’ve never seen them before.

Very effortlessly, I am proud to say. I will usually do one or all of the following:

- Scream and flail loudly (out of excitement)
- Scream and flail loudly (out of frustration)
- Eat copious waffles
- Spend the greater part of my life on Pinterest
- Plot furiously
- Keep my sister up at night by demanding feedback on all my ideas
- Bang my head repeatedly on my desk if I feel the need to

Returning to Port Orange and its beautiful characters. Because I’m not ready to leave them in the fictional dust. (And let’s just blissfully ignore the fact that I’m also plotting a full-fledged sequel to Port Orange. I KNOW. I HAVE A PROBLEM. Someone help me. By, you know, making me waffles.) Port Orange holds a special place in my heart and I can’t wait to see how the rest of the story unfolds.

Whoa, hold it RIGHT THERE you sneaky twofold question! ONE THING AT A TIME.

The themes: Hope. Healing. Self-worth. Exploring the “idk” of life. Seeing the darkness. Seeing the light. Love is always the answer. Oh and waffles. That’s another deep theme in this book: WAFFLES ARE GOOD FOR YOU.

The feeling I hope readers leave the story with: Dissatisfaction. (Hopefully not with the book! *NERVOUS LAUGHTER*) I mean dissatisfaction with the nice clean boxed-up answers the world gives us. I want readers to question things – probe the darkness, explore the light. See how far it takes you. Find the lost puzzle pieces of Love scattered throughout this chaotic world. Hold onto that Love and never let go.

THE Q&A THAT YOU NEVER ASKED FOR:

To be completely honest, my blogger frens are the culprits behind this insanity. Last year a LOT of you guys did NaNo and you made it look like SO MUCH FUN. (Yes, to me, stressful things are fun.) I’ve never challenged myself to write anything in a short span of time* so I thought WHY NOT. (And now I'm a little nervous??)

*except for blog posts like this one, with quickly approaching scheduled deadlines.

Funny you should ask* – because I happen to have a small problem with getting distracted. As in I have never written a book without getting stuck somewhere halfway through and being like “you know what sounds like fun right now? Writing something TOTALLY DIFFERENT.” (Pro tip: this is NOT the most efficient way to write a book.)

NaNoWriMo means: write 50,000 words in one month. But that is like half of a book for me. All my novels always end up being a minimum of 100,000 words. So will I feel like I conquered some epic goal if I don’t write a complete novel in the month of November? Probably not. So is my REAL goal 100k? WHO KNOWS. I most certainly do not know, sir.

*i know, you didn’t ask. SO KIND OF YOU. moving on.

My survival plan is actually very simple:

- Drink lots of tea
- Eat lots of waffles/chocolate/chocolate waffles
- Listen to lots of Twenty One Pilots*

*because motivation to stay alive and write this book.

I wouldn’t dream of it, my frens! Because how would I explain to your family if you suddenly perished from lack of my awesomeness?* No, you can expect a post every Saturday (because I’m heeding the results of my survey and perfecting my posting schedule) as well as many emotional flailings on Twitter and Instagram.

*clearly i would perish from lack of ego, which is why i exercise it so often.

RIGHT NOW MY DEAR SIR. I’ve been waiting all month to ceremoniously throw this link in your face, along with the working title of my NaNo novel!

Allow me to introduce: The Head Games.

Who else is doing NaNoWriMo? What is YOUR book’s aesthetic? Do you have any tips for a newbie like me? Or will I survive off of chocolate waffles? Do you make Pinterest boards for your novels? ARE YOU KIND OF FREAKING OUT BECAUSE NANO STARTS IN FIVE DAYS??

love,
abbiee

  1. I dream about doing Nanowrimo... not only what it has to be, to devote a month to writing, as desperate and wonderful it may be, but to be inside a chaotic buzzing of writers very very active... Yeah I dream. Because I have school. I cannot even think about it. :( :( I'm so envious... Write for me too!

  17. I've never ever participated in NaNo. But I want to, but also I am terrified to try.

Port Orange sounds awesome! It's very original: the only book I've read set on ANY type of farm was Animal Farm by George Orwell XD (PS - That Pinterest board made my heart very happy. Whereas my own looks like a disorientated mess lol)

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
