10 Reasons Why You Should Sing More Often

As y’all probably know, I am a singer/songwriter.* Music is my biggest passion and it's the thing I feel most alive doing. I write songs, sing them, and then repeat that process like 8,326,446 times. I LOVE SINGING. It makes me feel powerful, happy, and energized. And today, my fabulous frens, I’m going to do my level best to recruit you into singing more often. BECAUSE I HAVE REALLY GOOD REASONS.

First let’s get something out of the way: YOU CAN SING. DON’T SAY THAT YOU CAN’T. Honestly, think about it. Everyone can sing. When you say you “can’t” you’re really just saying that you’re not good at it (#logic) but DUDE. THAT’S BECAUSE YOU NEED TO PRACTICE. You need to find your voice. I don’t suggest following any one set of rules or instruction – I just suggest singing more and more. That’s what my process has been for the past few years and I have witnessed my voice drastically improve. SO! HERE ARE SOME REALLY GOOD REASONS (if I do say so myself) TO SING MORE OFTEN.

* yes yes it’s a thing and you can listen to me do this thing over on youtube muahahhaa. i’ve released 2 singles and am working on recording my debut album to be released idk when. stay tuned. ahem.

It’s especially fun when nobody is watching/listening. I’m notorious for throwing karaoke parties when my parents leave me alone in the house (parties that only my two small dogs are invited to = the best kinds of parties.) I turn up some instrumental tracks of my favorite songs and start belting out some lyrics and dancing around my bedroom. DON’T TELL ME THAT DOESN’T SOUND LIKE A PARTAY, SIR.

Does this have something to do with deep breaths and screaming belt-singing at the top of your lungs?? IDK MAYBE. For me, singing is an empowering experience. I just feel like I could quite possibly conquer the world when I sing. AND NOBODY CAN STOP ME MUAHAHAHAHAHA.

As an introvert, I experience a lot of awkward silences in conversations. I HAVE NOTHING TO SAY. Now what? These are obviously the ideal times to spontaneously break into song. Because nothing kicks an awkward silence like that, right?? As an introvert, I would obviously never do this in a million years. (But I can think about it and laugh quietly in my head and then the person will be like “yo what are you thinking about” and I’ll have something to talk to them about/scare them with. #SUCCESS)

Obviously singing is not all sunshine and rainbows. It can be super difficult. BUT THAT’S ONE OF THE GOOD THINGS ABOUT IT. When you don’t give up on your voice and rise to the challenge, you’ll feel so accomplished. Sometimes I have to practice a line of a song over and over and over again before I can train my voice to hit the right notes. IT’S TEDIOUS. IT TAKES PRACTICE. But guess what? It’s worth it.

As we go about our day doing our desk work, house work, or Pinterest “work,” the average person uses about 30% of their lung capacity. THAT IS NOT MUCH, SIR. Deep breathing is something that we just don’t think about doing – unless we are exercising, practicing yoga, or being chased up Mount Everest by a mangy wolverine.* DEEP BREATHING = MORE OXYGEN = GOOD. Singing is even being used as therapy for people suffering from lung conditions. Which is pretty awesome. SINGING IS HEALTHY. Do it.

* idk why a mangy wolverine. apparently a healthy wolverine wasn’t scary enough.

Even if you professedly “can’t” sing, you still look pretty awesome through the soundproof window belting out that chorus and making wild hand gestures. Like let’s face it: performance is all people care about these days. YOU MIGHT AS WELL FEEL LIKE A CELEBRITY. Muahaha.

When I started improving my singing voice, I started feeling so much more confident – and not just when I have a microphone in front of my face. When I’m starting a conversation or walking into a room. Singing has given me a whole new understanding of confidence. I have a feeling of calm control when I sing – but I also find myself carrying that #boss into other areas of my life. AND IT’S VERY COOL.

Just another perk singing has for it. Yep it actually burns calories AND tones your inner abdominal muscles. Allow me to geek out for a minute: imagine all the muscles you are contracting when you’re holding a note, controlling your breath, or doing anything else with your singing voice?? YO. IT’S AMAZING. Also if you’re playing an instrument (ie: slamming on a piano like I do) AND singing at the same time? Bro. Let’s call it a workout.

SINGING IN THE SHOWER IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE THINGS TO DO.* And it’s also healthy.** Because steam + warmth = the best environment for vocal warmups! IT’S A TRUTH. Also long showers are the best and singing is a great excuse to enjoy more hot water – BECAUSE YOU HAD TO FINISH THAT SONG, RIGHT? Yes. Absolutely. Unquestionably.

* besides like… pinterest.
** i know, you’re like omg abbie EVERYTHING IS HEALTHY according to you but let’s not get distracted how about you just mindlessly believe everything I say and we move on???

Regardless of how old you are, how experienced you are, or how many vocal lessons you’ve taken, everyone who can speak can also sing to some extent. ENJOY IT. Don’t focus on being a great vocalist, just focus on having fun! Singing can be a beautiful thing if you just let go and take it for what it is. Love yourself. Love your voice. OK? OK COOL.

Do you love singing as much as I do? Or just…love singing at all? Do you hate singing?? Do you tell yourself that you “can’t sing?” SPOILER ALERT: YOU’RE WRONG. Are you convinced that you really ought to sing more often? If not, what even. I have failed. ADD TO THIS LIST PLEASE.

love,
abbiee

  1. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE TO SIIIIIIING! (I know you couldn't hear it, but that last word was indeed sung) Hahaha, just ask my family! They will tell you I sing too much. I had the reputation of an opera singer as a (younger) child. Now, they sing almost as much as I do so SUCCESS! WORLD DOMINATION, ONE SONG AT A TIME. (I need that on a t-shirt) But technically, it isn't ONE song. I have this game I play with my sisters and our friends where we all sing a different song AT THE SAME TIME and see who can last the longest. I usually win. Not being prideful here, just the facts of life.

I WISH I HAD AN INSTRUMENT. Remind me again why I don't have one? Oh yeah, NO MONEY. Why are dollars so useful and so hard to get! All mine are going to go to a trip to England. To visit my sisters. Good times, but I need a violin. I need it! *sigh*

I totally agree! Everything sung is 100,000% better, and HEALTHIER! SINGING IS MY LIFE, AND LOOK AT ME! GOD'S GIFT TO HUMANITY. (Just kidding, but you know what I mean) Any person who doesn't think they can sing must not have a mouth. That is the only way possible. I need to practice more, though. I only sing like 500,0000 times a day.... I am such a slacker. Okay bye, I'm gonna go sing!

Sometimes me and my sister try doing the melody and harmony parts of songs together and OMG IT'S SO HARD. or or or we'll rap Twenty One Pilots songs together which is awesome.

Eeeep violin looks so difficult but it sounds absolutely beautiful. I have a friend who plays violin and tbh i have no idea how she does it. xD It's awesome. ASDFGHJKL YOU'RE GOING ON A TRIP TO ENGLAND CAN I COME PLEASE?? wow that sounds epic. <3 gah dude we need to like jam together someday ok that would be awesome. BECAUSE SINGING. MUAHAHA. Thank you so much for reading and commenting and sdfghjk you rock!!

  3. Amen, sister. I used to think I "couldn't sing" -- or I just shouldn't sing because I was no good at it -- but lately I started singing again and I realized...my voice doesn't suck? It's not perfect, but it doesn't suck at all, and the more I sing the more I improve. Plus, I realized that it's fun for me! And just because my voice is a little bit different than the singers that I hear, that doesn't mean it's bad, either. So I've been singing more (especially in the shower, heh) and having so much fun with it. *high fives*

  4. ADFJKLADLKASDFL!!! ABBIEEEEE!!! I needed this today. I LOVE to sing, don't get me wrong, but I'm not super confident in my voice even though I'm a semi decent singer. It makes me want to start practicing piano again...
Also, I have a question. How did you get to the point when you felt really calm singing? Because whenever I have to sing in front of anybody, my voice gets really pitchy and I get all jittery. And tomorrow I have auditions for the solo parts in the Women's Choral at my school and I want to be as prepared as possible. Do you have any tips?
AND DID I MENTION?! This is a fabulous post!

    2. GAH WOW OMG THANK YOU SO MUCH LIZ. <333333 YOUR COMMENTS ALWAYS MAKE ME SMILE SO MUCH AND JUST MAKE ME SO ASDFGHJKL HAPPY. :) but omg I didn't see this comment until just now so any tips I give you right now are probably too late??! ACKK SORRY. But I'm sure you'll be fabulous at your audition!! As for tips, I would say: it's all a mental game. Whatever goes on in my head usually determines how my voice sounds?? IDK. I first get nervous in my head and then my voice gets shaky and my breath isn't controlled. (ugh.) So what I usually do is just some simple affirmations in my head, like "I am calm and confident. I have an awesome voice." and I just kind of confess stuff like that to myself? Also slow, deep breaths before singing helps me to calm my nervousness/excited heartbeat lol. I FEEL LIKE I'M REALLY BAD WITH ADVICE OMG BUT I HOPE THIS HELPS. EEEP. <3

ASDFKL THANK SO MUCH LIKE WAHT YOU ARE TOO KIND. CHILLS. <3 *hugs you intensely and gives you all the waffles*

  5. I can't carry a tune in a bucket, and I'd never willingly sing in public, but I do love singing along to whatever song I'm listening to. Or humming. I'm honestly much better at appreciating music than making my own, and that's fine with me.

  7. I needed this, because I haven't been practicing at all lately and that's bad. It's so easy to just forget all this awesome stuff about singing that you listed, and get hung up on stress and perfectionism. And then you forget your voice, and what you love about singing to begin with, and the fact that it's GOD"S GIFT. And don't sing. So thanks for this post, it is perfectly timed for me <3 <3 <3
Also, it is healthy. Why would we question free, random assertions of things that are healthy? Just roll with it. You should tell us pie and stuff is healthy, too. ;P

Because yes singing can be so much fun and exactly as you said it's God's gift to us!! IT'S BEAUTIFUL. <3 PIE IS HEALTHY YES. AND WAFFLES!! MUSTN'T FORGET ABOUT DA WAFFLES. ;) come on over i'll make us some healthy waffles and then we can have a healthy karaoke part together ok

    also...
Sister #1: Emily, can you please stop singing?
Sister #2: Emily, cut it with the singing, please!
Sister #3: You sing alllll the time, Emily! Stop!
Sister #4: Why do you sing so much?
    xD

I started to quote some of my favorite phrases in this post, BUT THERE ARE TOO MANY. Seriously, how are you this humorous and awesome?? But my favorite part was Point #3.

YOU AND YOUR MUSIC ARE AMAZING. I can't wait to hear more songs of yours and hear your album when it comes out!! <3 <3 <3

  12. I have SUCH a love hate relationship with singing! Like, okay, when you're jamming alone, YASSS. Singing is the best thing ever and it's time to just belt it out at the top of your lungs. But then, something scary comes into the equation.

    ........*whispers* PEOPLE.

    *shudder*

Singing in front of people scares the living daylights out of me. (Not a good fear to have when you're obsessed with musical theatre..heh.) I think it's just because I don't think that I'm very good at it? (And my sister has the voice of an ACTUAL angel so bam there goes any confidence that tiny Grace Anne may have had. Whoops.)

BUT SINGING IS FUN SO I'M TRYING TO WORK ON THAT EVEN IF IT ISN'T GOING VERY WELL.

I seriously loved this post so much. XD You always make me laugh out loud. And I can't wait for that debut album, miss rock star;)

AAAHHHH IT'S A WORKOUT. (oh yeah and your last post i totally forgot to comment on *facepalm* BUT I WANTED TO THANK YOU FOR PUTTING THAT AMAZING PHOTO OF THAT VIOLINIST ON IT.
