5 Annoying Things People Say When You Change Your Blog (Or Start A New One)

Bloggers, surprisingly, are very much like every other human on the face of the earth* – bloggers change. (Especially wildly confused teenager bloggers such as myself.) My interests are not exactly what they were at age 10. Even over the past 3 years, my hobbies and passions have changed dramatically. I believe that bloggers should write about what they love – what makes them feel ALIVE.

As some of you know, I used to have a food blog. It was called Everything Needs Salt and I poured two years of energy and devotion into that blog. Finally I realized that cooking wasn’t my passion – in fact, it was standing in the way of things that I really wanted to spend time on: music and writing. So I stopped blogging at Everything Needs Salt. It was a major refocus for me. The important thing: I WAS HAPPY. (And super excited for the new projects I was about to embark on!! MUAHAHA!) But people had some annoying things to say about it. (DISCLAIMER: I’m not trying to whine and complain here. I’m just whining and complaining, don’t mind me.

*LOLOL WHO AM I KDDING? we are far more fabulously crazy.

This is a fabulous question and one I wouldn’t mind being asked more often. THE PROBLEM IS THIS: whenever someone asks this question, they are most probably referring to my old blog – THE ONE I DON’T RUN ANYMORE. So what do you do when someone asks this question and you can just tell you aren’t both on the same page? IT’S A PAINFUL PAIN MY FREN.

“Um, well… I kind of don’t have that blog anymore. I have a different blog now. I’m kind of like…doing different stuff now. So I changed my blog.” <<< SEE? AWKWARD.

Okay so most people know what redesigning is, but not everyone likes it 100% of the time. I remember when I first redesigned my blog (this was like 300 years ago, kind sir – don’t hurt yourself trying to remember that far back.) For the longest time, I had a narrow post column and a background of a typewriter illustration – and yes: EVERYTHING WAS CYAN.* When I first changed my blog to have a white background, everyone was kind of collectively like, “AWWWWW. I LIKED YOUR OTHER DESIGN.” Some things take accepting! Don’t tailor your blog’s design to what makes other people happy – do what makes YOU happy.

* i think we all regret the decisions we make when we are twelve years old.

AND WHAT IF I DID? WHAT IF I HAPPENED TO ABSOLUTELY HAAAAAATE MY OLD BLOG AND WANTED TO RAIN DOWN FIERY WRATH OF DEMOLITION UPON IT?? Well, then, that’s my decision to make. Sometimes it’s good to not COMPLETELY delete things (because #nostalgia) but other times, hey – you might feel like GETTING IT OUT OF YOUR FACE FOREVER. And that is perfectly okay. Don’t let people make you feel guilty for moving on.

GUYS. DO YOU KNOW HOW OFTEN I COOK/BAKE ANYMORE?? EXACTLY 1% OF THE TIME.* Yet still everyone who knew about my food blog is like: “So what have you been cooking lately, Abbie?” HAHA. NOTHING. My own brain as I attempt to write books – maybe that. (But they wouldn’t understand the struggle.) The point is: it’s totally okay to go through phases. It’s totally okay to move on. People who were interested in the last thing you did will probably also be interested in the new thing you’re doing!

* as in i will occasionally put a frozen meal into the oven if my mom isn’t home to make dinner. ok and SOMETIMES i make waffles because WAFFLES DUH.
AH YES. How do I put this delicately? I LIKED MY OLD BLOG TOO BUT THERE IS A TIME AND A SEASON FOR EVERYTHING UNDER HEAVEN AND I WASN’T FEELING IT ANYMORE SO I MOVED ON. We don’t give up things because we don’t like them – we give up things because we grow tired of them. And something I tire of doing is obviously not something that makes me feel ALIVE. So we’re officially calling it quits, over, el periodo, no hard feelings. MY FOOD BLOG AND I PARTED AS FRENS.

Now let’s move on.

Have you ever changed your blog’s theme/started a new blog and deleted your old one? How did people take it? Did they say annoying things? Can you add to this list? Have you ever quit something because it was getting in your way of doing something you truly loved? LET’S TALK, FRENS.

love,
abbiee

  2. BAHAHAA!!!!!!!!!!! so got this. like????! I used to blog for orphans in different countries..and then I started Writing for His Glory, which morphed into The Barefoot Gal. I totally am head over heels in love with what I do..and now I have Twilight to Dawn, in which I get to explore my love of poetry FREELY. I have no abligation to post or anything..it's so freeing and fun!! I adore blogging..it's my thing lol!

But all of the above is so perfect. You should do a post about being a younger sister...I think I would love to relate to that one XD "so what do YOU do Julia?" (after they hear the amazing stuff my older sister does) "hahaa..I...paint. and do DIY thing. I BLOG. yeah. I blog." #MYLIFESOMETIMES

  3. PREACH!!! So, I've never changed blogs, but I changed what I blogged about about a year or so ago because although I liked reading other people's period drama themed blogs, I got of run out of stuff to say about Pride and Prejudice, and hey, I still LOVE LOTR, but right now, I want to talk about what my characters have been teaching me, not Tolkien's (okay, sometimes still Tolkien's) And I don't always talk about writing and books and stuff. Sometimes I want to talk about an issue that's been bothering me, or something little and beautiful I noticed, or maybe I want to talk about cheese. IDK. Wow, that was a long rant, I guess it just boils down to being yourself and blogging about stuff you're passionate about at the moment... Anyhow FABULOUS post, I wish I was as awesome at design as you are, cause then I'd change my blog design too... #jeregreterien #actuallyiregretnottakingcomputerandartclasses...

PSHH NO YOU AREN'T RANTING AT ALL. I loved hearing about the other themes you've explored with your blog!! And aw omg thank you so much :''''') I don't really know what I'm doing, I just kind of play around with design until I can't stand it anymore ahahahahahem. <3 THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING DEAR.

  4. YES I had a food blog with my friend, and when we both got busy, we decided to quit. I heard almost ALL of these from people and it was frustrating! (especially when they ask "How's your blog going?" UGH. I still love baking and cooking, but I don't share it with the world anymore Muahaha xD

    1. ASDFGHJKL YES MEGAN YOU ARE ME YOU UNDERSTAND MY STRUGGLES. <3333 omg isn't it so awkward when people think you're still doing something but you're not anymore then you have to explain everything *buries head in a pile of waffles* WAHH. I'M SO HAPPY YOU CAN RELATE TO THIS, GIRL. <3333

  5. Ugh, the struggle. You may know that making cards is like my thing, and I I've done it for lots of years. So when I started blogging, I only did card tutorials, and I felt for while like I couldn't do anything else because then I would be being inconsistent! But once I got past that hurdle...so much better. Can say that again? SO much better. Now I do all sorts of different crafts on the blog, and enjoy it so much more. It's not like I never do cards anymore - they're still "my thing", in fact, but it's so nice to dabble in lots other crafts too. And, it's good for my brain, AND, my readers enjoy it more! (Seriously, all my posts that are not card tutorials get more views than those that ARE card tutorials.) Anywho, yes, good job. I agree.

    1. YAY I'M SO HAPPY YOU CAN RELATE TO THIS, MAGGIE. <3 And yes!! I completely agree with you there -- doing the same thing for every post really tires me out. xD But same, there was a time when I felt like all I should do is one kind of topic for each post on a blog. But we all love variety!! SO YES YOUR SOLUTION = AWESOME. We are fabulous multitalented creatures and cannot be put in a box! *fist bump*

  6. I didn't changed blogs but I changed the topics that I've been writing about and when I went for a lifestyle or baking, people were like "What are you doing, you're bookblogger. Is this a review? No, so what is it doing here?" First of all, it's none of their bussiness what person puts on his/her blog and second of all, we don't have one hobby. People usually have multiple hobbies and it's only natural they want to share their passion. :)

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. YAAAS EXACTLY SIMONE. *nods violently* soooo true. I feel like that is looked down upon a lot: having multiple talents! And having more than one topic to discuss. I mean...look at my blog it's like a mish-mash of a million different things haha *NERVOUS LAUGHTER* but I love what I'm doing and so should every other blogger. :) PREACH, GIRL. YOU GOT IT.

  8. I seem to fairly alone here, but I've haven't changed my blog since I began - a couple of layout tweaks, but the design has been the same. So I haven't been told any of those things, but I can see it would be annoying. (And just for reassurance, I really like your current blog design, and your posts are always interesting and fun to read!)

Actually, it's funny, I had such a hard time naming my blog; I literally just came across the phrase 'apples of gold' in Proverbs, and thought that will do. But now, I really like the title because it's not specific - it doesn't speak particularly of a food blog, or a book blog, or anything. So I'm hoping my blog can just grow along with me as life changes.

Okay, excuse this random question, but is Kate your only sibling? I think about you both a lot, because you both have a way of writing that sticks, and realized I didn't know the answer to that question, so... I guess that's why I asked. :)

  10. Wowza, ain't this the truth! I used to have at least 2 other blogs but I wanted to start from scratch, thus Acoustic Erin was born. I totally feel the struggle of measuring your old blog against your new one. I have horrible perfectionist tendencies with the design, too. So basically this post was #relatable. Blogging is just so hard, man! #allthehaters hehe Ultimately, you gotta blog because YOU want to and YOU love it. It's your life and it is your blog :)

  13. RIGHHHHTTT??? I was just agreeing with everything I read in this post when I read it. SO TRUE. I started blogging on a doll blog (technically I still have it...technically I never quit it...so technically I should post sometime on there) and I LOVED IT. Then I think my passion for dolls kinda quit and I realized that I didn't just want to post about dolls forever. AR&W has been my only other blog since then, AND ALTHOUGH THE TITLE IS CRINGE WORTHY IT IS A PART OF MOI.

Also for realz though can I just say how amazing your food blog was? Like I clicked on the link and just looked back on your posts like GIRL YOU ARE ONE TALENTED PHOTOGRAPHER AND FOOD CREATOR. LIKE REALLY. BUT I TOTALLY GET YOU ON CHANGE. My blog has changed in a LOT of ways since I started blogging and I think that's good too :)

I love your blog (especially with the new template it's soooo pretty and aesthetic!) AWWW THANK YOU SO MUCH. I really did enjoy food blogging when I did it (until it got too exhausting) and it helped get me into photography, so I will give credit to it there. ;) I probably never would have gotten a DSLR camera if I hadn't started a food blog. SO THERE IS THAT...A BEAUTIFUL BLESSING IN DISGUISE. <3 thank you so much for reading, Autumn dear!!

  14. HAHAHAHAH! This made me laugh so hard!! I've only had one blog, my current one, but it has definitely changed over the years. I've had this blog for five whole years now, so of course it's going to change because I've changed. My blog originally had a different name and look and it used to be primarily about fashion, but now it's a mix of fashion and books, but leaning more towards books since that's my real love. Don't listen to the haters! BE YOU AND DON'T APOLOGIZE! *drops mic*

I've never completely overhauled my blog... I did change the name from "Epiphanies" to "the cwtch", which I like lots better. My followers pretty much took it in stride, though (maybe because I only had, like, 4) so I didn't experience the drama;)
