Maine: In Photos

Maine is having all the right words to describe it, but having none at all.
Wondering what happens when dogs come home from the beach all wet and salty and covered in sand. Thinking that you’re smelling something like saltwater but it’s actually the seaweed washed ashore.

Cold, salty water.
Thick, sweet ice cream.
Rainy days and sunny days and oh look the dog stepped in pine sap.

Night drives and slipping off my flip-flops and resting my head against the window and looking out at the darkness speckled with confetti lights. Windows reflecting the street and sky reflecting the water and my soul hums in tempo with my heart. The clouds are the colors of my sundress and I have a braid in my hair and ouch, I love you so much it hurts.

We wake up early when we could sleep late.
But that’s okay.

The waves look like the sun, but not when you’re in them. Then they’re like swimming swirling giants inviting you to dance – no, really, come on. Fine maybe just for a minute. For an hour or two. For the rest of my life. And you don’t need all that mascara, let’s wash it off. See? You’re beautiful, with your messy bun wet and tangled and your bright eyes on fire and your legs are numb but it feels good, doesn’t it?

So I let you try my sunglasses and you let me try yours.
And we look at all the pretty houses and imagine living in them.

I hear seagulls.
I hear the bass of someone else’s car stereo.
I hear my sister’s laugh from a while away.

I see pine trees and surfers and a guy who looks like Josh Dun. I listen to soft acoustic music and put my window down and wear my dad’s baseball hat. There are baked sun-bleached lookouts and damp gray beaches and warm pumping town centers and cool dark churches.

I live for the breath in my lungs. I forget to post on intagram or joke on twitter.
But I’m alive, which is all I want to be.

I’m writing this whole thing on one unlined sheet of paper. My handwriting is messy, but that’s just because I’m not trying. I miss you all. So much. WHAT HAVE YOU GUYS BEEN UP TO?? (Promise I’ll binge-read y’all’s blogs when I get back.)

love,
abbiee

    1. ASDFGHJKL THANK YOU SO MUCH ANDREA. <3 you're so kind to me. :'''') and I did edit the photos in PicMonkey -- I go very light on the filters, but there's this one called "tranquil" that gives a warm blueish tint and it's really pretty. Then for some of the photos I added a dark or light grain to make them a bit more moody. ;) THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR READING DEAR <33333

  2. I've only been to Maine once, last summer, but when I went it was raining harder than I've ever seen it rain before (rain is a fantasy in California). Everything was green and wet and beautiful.
    You're such a talented writer x) <33

  5. Your posts about places you've been make me want to pack my bags right now. This world is a wonderful place, and I've seen so little of it. :( Anyway, I guess adventure starts in the heart, so even my everyday view can be exciting if I think of it that way.

Also, I'm so behind on commenting on your blog. Suffice it say, I really enjoyed your post about singing! Every point was excellent, and yes, I need to sing more (especially as you mentioned the physical benefits - if singing can count as exercise, I'm going for it.) The other point I thought of though, is that God is a musical God. Singing is a way we can praise Him, and there's singing in heaven, so we'd better get used to it, right?!

  14. asdfghjkl the gorgeousness of the photos and the words and the way my heart is now aching to go to Maine (I've never been). The way you described did remind me of how I felt when we went to Martha's Vineyard though. The waves and the sea air and the snarled, wild hair and the sand and the long grass... *sighs happily*

  26. This was musical and magical. I love love LOVE that you wrote this out on paper! There is something so beautiful about life -- real life. Taking time to unplug and step away from the madness of machines is something I long to do each and every day. These photographs are gorgeous, and gosh, your words are so delicious!

    This line:

"Night drives and slipping off my flip-flops and resting my head against the window and looking out at the darkness speckled with confetti lights."

Confetti lights?! You rock! I loved this.

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
