7 Reasons Why I Might Actually Be British

TODAY IS THE DAY WE TALK ABOUT A MARVELOUS SUBJECT: ME. I am obviously pretty awesome for a long list of reasons* but let’s talk about how I’m ALMOST certain that I am actually British.** Now for a disclaimer: I know NOTHING about British people other than what I have brilliantly learned from Downton Abbey, Mr. Selfridge, and Jane Austen books/movies. This is probably a post full of stereotypes that not all British people meet. BUT IF YOU’RE BRITISH, PLEASE DON’T THINK ILL OF ME (see that’s a phrase you guys use, right??) because I THINK YOU’RE AWESOME. And if I’m not already British, I WISH I WAS. So with that little disclaimer out of the way, LET’S GO OVER THE EVIDENCE.

*a monstrous list which we obviously do not have time to compose *LOUD COUGHING*
**OKAY OKAY so yes i actually have a small fragment of British in my blood. some tiny amount like 14% but STILL. there.

I’ve always been FAR MORE in love with tea than with coffee. (In fact coffee hates me now and gives me a stomach ache. Not nice, coffee. We are never ever getting back together.) In the afternoons, I try to always break from my work and have a cup of tea (preferably with cake or waffles or toast – TOAST IS BRITISH, RIGHT??)

I ALSO LOOK ADOPTED IN THIS REGARD. My family goes to the beach and the only one who looks like they didn’t go to the beach is ME OF COURSE. I am perpetually ghostly-white or slightly sunburnt. There is no in between. Is this a good or bad thing? We don’t know.*

*but at least i’ll have something in common with our new president?? #AllHailThePale

It’s become routine for my sister to accuse me of not laughing at her jokes – OR SHOULD I SAY “BRITISH LAUGHING” AT HER JOKES. It’s like laughing, only it’s silent. Because we don’t like people to see us smiling and all that nonsense. Also your joke was brilliant, I was crying laughing in my head…it just didn’t reach my face. No hard feelings.

CAN WE TAKE A MOMENT TO APPRECIATE BRITISH ACTING?? Because I am 10000% convinced that British acting surpasses American acting by LIGHT YEARS. Why is this?? You would think that after all the beautiful BBC dramas, our Hollywood folks would hike themselves over to the UK and get some proper lessons in acting. Also it’s fair to say that I’ve never been obsessed with a non-British TV show. It just has not happened, sir. Even the shows I was addicted to AS A SMALL CHILD were British. That’s devotion right there. Or BLOODLINE?? IDK. YOU TELL ME.

Of course I care about money. WE ALL DO, KIND OF, RIGHT?? But I don’t want people to think I ever worry about money. Nope. I’m totally calm and composed and nothing stresses me out! NOT EVEN A POTENTIAL APOCALYPSE NOPE I’M FINANCIALLY GOOD EVEN THOUGH I HAVE $2 IN MY BANK ACCOUNT.

Oh dear, now you want to HEAR IT don’t you?? Fine then.

Why can’t we be cool, calm, and collected ALL THE TIME?? Why can’t we at least APPEAR that way? So that other people see us and are like “omg goals” because they wish they weren’t so illogical and emotional too?? I’m not sure if this is a British thing or a Vulcan thing, but I’ll embrace it either way.

So what do you think? AM I ACTUALLY BRITISH? Here’s another question: are YOU actually British?? (with or without knowing it…also if you legit ARE British please tell me if I’m at all right in thinking that I belong in the UK.) Can you speak in a different accent? Are you on #TeamCoffee or #TeamTea?? (WHOA that’s the big question right there.)

love,
abbiee

I AM SUPER PALE TOO. I have LOTS of freckles though, so there's that. xD I get horribly sunburned. Apparently that is just a part of being a redhead. *sigh* :P

OH MY GOODNESS. Silent laughing. That is me so much.

OMG YOU SLAY AT A BRITISH ACCENT!

Okay, so if these qualifications make me British, then I think I qualify. xD It's just that I don't LOVE tea. I meet all the other things. ^_^

  10. Duuuude your British accent is AMAZING THERE. You sound like Elizabeth Swan. I LOVE IT.πŸ˜‚ I used to do a fairly convincing Irish accent, although it was more like a male Irish accent so idek how that was happening.πŸ˜‚ I blame my brother. He was obsessed with Irish music/accents and like talked perpetually in it, so I think that's where I got it from. EITHER WAY IRISH ACCENTS ARE COOL. Also, ahem, my sister and I like to fake Aussie accents. Yes. I realise we are, in fact, Australian. But you know the kind of Aussie accent you'll hear on TV or whatever? We dooon't sound like that. People barely ever sound like that.πŸ˜‚ So we just bop around FAKING OUR OWN COUNTRY'S ACCENTS AND IDEK.
    Okay. I'm majorly digressing.
But I'm baaack from hiatus so clearly have missed stalking your posts/talking your ear off. Ahem.
Also I'm pretty sure Britain needs to adopt you. *nods* Very speedily. You obviously belong there. ;D Also your voice is so lovely I'm 99% sure you should start narrating audiobooks. I AM JUST SAYIN'.

Those are fun. xD OH AND I USED TO BE OBSESSED WITH IRISH CELTIC MUSIC WHEN I WAS YOUNGER?? yeah. <3 good times.

OMG YES I KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU MEAN. The exaggerated Aussie accents. *rolls eyes* That's so funny that you and your sister would fake your own country's accents!! xD

EEEEP WELCOME BACK!! *high fives* I hope you survived writing your book alright!! (And I hope you have those snippets ready for us... ;) muahaha) WELL I'M OFF TO BUY A ONE-WAY TICKET TO THE UK NOW. 14. You know, except for the accent, you could be Australian; although, I realise Australian just isn't as cool as British.. We're not all leather-skinned bushies, and as Cait said, that strong Aussie accent isn't how everyone talks anyway. Laughing silently, pretending not to care about money, viewing emotions as annoying, the tough exterior style - there'd be things to learn probably, but you'd fit. :)

And good job with the British accent! The only accent I can imitate is American (believe me, we actually hear a lot of it). I've tried British, and yeah - I think I'm too unfamiliar with it. Anyway, this was a fun post - you come up with excellent original post ideas!

    1. DUDE REALLY?? NO OMG AUSTRALIAN IS SO COOL!! And wow yes that thick accent stereotype *nod nod* I've heard legit Australian people talk and they almost sound British -- it's not that big of a difference at all. :) YES CAN I COME TO AUSTRALIA NOW?? BECAUSE THERE IS YOU AND CAIT AND SOME OF THE BEST WAVES IN THE WORLD. <3333 and you can teach me how to be a proper Australian. ;)

It seems so funny to me that someone would imitate an American accent -- just because I have one, no doubt. xD BUT OUR ACCENTS AREN'T PRETTY OR ANYTHING. It's sad. :') *hugs you and gives you all the waffles* THANK YOU SO MUCH JESSICA YOU'RE SO KIND.

  15. Haha, I love this post. I'm American but I moved to the UK for school last year. I'd say you have a very good running chance of actually being a misplaced British person. 16. I loved reading this post, as I can relate to most of it and (although I'm American and have never truly visited England) actually am at least 1/16th British (one of my great-great grandmothers came to America from Greenwich in like 1912). I love tea and could drink it constantly if I had the means. I can do a British accent that I'm quite proud of, and I even "mispronounce" things the British way sometimes. Most of my favorite shows and actors are from the U.K., as are most of my favorite books and authors (*cough* Austen, Lewis, Tolkien *cough cough*). My laugh, though, is completely American: loud, blasting, and often used.

    1. Oooh that's so fascinating, Abbie! (ALSO HOW COME I DIDN'T KNOW YOU SPELLED YOUR NAME LIKE MINE. OMG. KINDRED SPIRIT. *gives you waffles*) I wish I knew more about my ancestry. :') YES I MISPRONOUNCE THINGS THE BRITISH WAY TOO. One my mom always gets me on is "crevasse" because I say it like "crah-vahs" instead of "crevvas" BECAUSE THE BRITISH PRONUNCIATION IS SO MUCH NICER SOUNDING. *flips hair*

EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS COMMENT IS PERFECT. XD And the thing about your laugh omg -- I'm sure you have a marvelous laugh, dear. <3 AND YESSS ALL THE BRITISH AUTHORS. *nod nod* true gems <333 thank you so much for reading, Abbie! :D

  17. Yes, my dear, you are VERY British! I must say, your accent is simply marvelous!!! And that is coming from the girl who's been to England, has 2 sisters LIVING in England, AND who's sister has a British boyfriend. I must confess, I was a bit skeptical. I know quite a few people who say they have British accents but they sound like a mix of American and an Australian with a cold. Just no. But yours!!! Was VERY GOOD! It felt so posh and real!! Good job!!

It is a sad day in the life of me, when I realize, I am NOT British, no matter HOW good I do the accent, or how HARD I wish I was. *is about to sob, but then remembers that she is trying to be British, and merely sniffs* (I know you can't hear it, but I AM writing this all in a British accent. Just saying). I am British, I carry on.
I do a tolerable British accent (a true British person told me mine was not bad), and I TELL myself, I can do Irish and Scottish. (Don't listen, self!) I play around with a Filipino, because it is SO MUCH FUN. I do a FINE Australian, and uhduh (totally not British there, I know. Shush) American. *shudders* American is such a.... lame accent. Sorry to fellow Americans, but it's true.

I am #TEAMTEA ALL THE WAY!!! I mean, I like coffee, but I hardly ever get a chance to drink it anyway, so TEA!!
Fun fact: when I visited England, we had tea and toast almost every day for breakfast!!!
Oh, Fun Fact number 2: THEY HAVE THE. BEST. CHEESE. EVER!!!
I am a rabid cheese fan, and THE CHEESE IN ENGLAND IS BETTER THAN TILLMOCK, AND THAT IS SAYING SOMETHING!!!

WONDERFULL POST, ABBIEE!!!! I am always SO excited to read your posts. You, and Cait are THE. BEST. BLOGGERS. EVER!!!!!!!!!
    Cheers!

    2. HAHAHA THANK YOU SO MUCH ESTHER. I'm one of those skeptical people too. :') Usually, like you said, people can't do British accents (or any accent other than their own, for that matter) but I definitely credit all the British TV I watch to my fabulous skillz. *flips hair* THANK YOU HEHE.

LOLOLOL I FEEL YOUR PAIN. Let us sniff non-emotionally together. :''') Oh and I could totally hear the British accent coming through your comment. *high fives* I AGREE THE AMERICAN ACCENT IS REALLY EH. Like...there is nothing pretty about it?? NOTHING. Although there are so many variations of American accent...it's crazy. AND VERY COOL. ;) YAAAAS TEA. ALWAYS TEA. Oooh and the British cheese sounds lovely! I can't wait to visit Europe one day and try alllll the food. <3
