Explore Us: Episode 06 feat. Sophia @ The Teentrepreneur - Collaboration

WHY HELLO THERE, episode six of the Explore U.S./Explore Us series!! I’M EXCITED TODAY, Y’ALL. Bet you can’t guess why. (Well I’m obviously excited because you’re following my travels on Instagram – um, RIGHT?? YOU BETTER BE, SIR.) But I’m even MOAR EXCITED because the fantabulous Sophia of The Teentrepreneur is here to conquer my blog today!! EVERYONE GIVE HER WAFFLES AND A HUGE WELCOME. She is soooo talented, inspiration, and GOING PLACES. Seriously, watch out for this supernova star. ;) Thank you again, Sophia, for being a part of this!

01. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING?

One thing I'm currently exploring is the idea of collaboration. I'm not talking about the "I'll post on your blog, you post on mine" sort of surface collaboration, but the real relationships and lets-create-something-amazing-together sort of collaboration. I know it might seem like a weird thing to explore, but I'm such an independent person, it's been a rather... inspirational.... journey.... (Sorry, didn't quite know what to say.) As a first born and only girl in a sea of brothers, I've learned from an early age that I can get things done a lot faster and more efficient when I do them on my own. However, I also know the power of collaborations and good relationships and networks and all that.

SOOOO this week I'm working as an intern with four other girls to create a web program prototype for a startup company. (It really is as cool as it sounds.) This form of collaboration is all new to me, but I'm excited to see where it leads. .

02. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT COLLABORATION?

I love how collaboration is the combination of everyone's genius. I truly believe everyone has a bit of genius in them, and sometimes talking through ideas and brainstorming brings out that genius. I love that. I love how through collaboration we are more powerful as a whole. It's truly fabulous. One thing that I didn't realize about collaboration until this internship was how quickly time passed. The other collaborators were hilarious and we were actually able to do a lot.

03. WHO OR WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START EXPLORING THIS?

Funny story. I interviewed for a completely different internship but was offered this one instead. At first it was just me but then a few more girls were added and now there are four. I guess this internship kind of plopped on my lap.

04. HOW DO YOU REACT TO PEOPLE WHO "DON'T APPROVE" OF WHAT YOU'RE DOING?

Most people I know don't care that I'm exploring collaboration (I mean really – to say that you're against collaboration is really lame) but some don't really like that I'm doing an internship that takes up so much of my time. I struggle a bit with feeling guilty that I'm not spending as much time with people close to me, but honestly? It's okay. The people who really care don't care.

05. WHAT IS THE 'EXPECTATION VS REALITY' OF COLLABORATION?

Haha, I think that a lot of what people expect from an internship is someone who makes coffee, gets lunch, throws out the trash, etc. This internship is really nothing like that. We all sit at a big table and do cool things and meet cool people all day. The "director" of this program is really good about making sure the interns are learning a lot and getting a good experience – she has helped us with resumes, cover letters, speaking skills, and so much more. Collaboration used to be a more negative word in my head but now I'm starting to see how powerful it is.

Also, some things are true about collaboration. Like, you can talk about really random things for a long time and waste all your time. Like, DID WE SERIOUSLY JUST ARGUE FOR FIFTEEN MINUTES ABOUT PUTTING BORDERS AROUND THE PICTURES?? And DID I REALLY NEED TO HEAR ABOUT YOUR DRAMATIC LOVE LIFE??! Lol.

06. NAME THREE PEOPLE/THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP EXPLORING THIS:

There are two guys that I honestly don't remember what their names are, but they have been business partners for 50+ years and have started several multi-million dollar companies together. One of them is the idea dude who comes up with all the brilliant ideas and the other one is the logical one who makes all the plans. That kind of collaboration is so cool to me.  I love reading stories about super successful collaborations between different types of people. Other than that, I would have to say my parents are a huge source of inspiration for collaboration – they have an epic relationship. :) (Okay, yes, that was four people. Sorry. I tend to break the rules a lot.)

07. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THE SAME THING?

I know a lot of you blogger friends are independent – I mean you write your own blogs and have an entire internet community you've created for yourself of amazing friends (rock on) but at the end of the day, real, deep, laugh-so-hard-you-make-the-other-people-mad collaboration is a great way to be more brilliant together. I honestly don't think I would have been able to create this web program by myself and it certainly wouldn't have had as much fun. I mean, today, WE FREAKING MADE MOST OF A BRAND NEW START UPS PROTOTYPE AND ALSO I MADE LIKE A TON OF NEW BEST FRIENDS. So yeah, that's where I'm at.

don’t leave this blog until you show sophia some love in the comments, people!!

xoxo,
abbiee

  2. Your internship sounds so inspiring and wonderful. I've honestly never been much of a collaborations person, so it was neat to get another point of view, and realize that there's a lot more to it. :)

  3. This is really awesome, Sophia! I loved hearing about your journey with collaboration. I'm a bit of a loner, and tend to work on projects by myself, but I have had a few excellent collab. experiences. You've inspired me to explore it more!

  4. Collaboration, for me, is kind of a scary thing to think about. But a lot of things scare me, haha. I'd like to become a pro craft blogger, and there are a whole lot of things abut that that are scary, and that have to do with collaboration probs. You look like you pretty much know what you're doing, ad that's really cool! Rock on!

  5. YES. you are me. I'm probably too resistant to the idea of collaboration. Like, I want to do things my way and in my time and not worry about having to communicate over internet (which, let's face it, often gets over-complicated), but then at the same time- I want to get to know and share with and learn from my tribe more!!!!!!!!!!!! Inspiring/motivational as always. :') You rock.

  6. This is an awesome topic. I honestly get freaked out at the idea of doing it, mainly because I really enjoy doing things in my own time aka procrastination. NOT GOOD. So doing things w/other people is a good thing, but it's something I have to push myself with. Since writing is something I'm super interested in, I joined a writer's group via email and it's interesting. I have to push myself to critique other's work, and to submit my own. but it's a good experience. ANYWAY SOPHIA...you are amazing.

  7. That's really awesome! Being independent and somewhat of a loner, I've never really been a huge fan of collaboration. But this post reminded me that we all have different strengths and weaknesses, and working together can accomplish a TON. That's really important! This was a super cool post. I'm looking into getting an internship for the fall, so it was pretty timely for me :) Glad to hear you're enjoying yours!

  8. Collaboration is SO hard. I'm typically of the mindset that it's easier to do things myself, and they'll turn out the way that I want them to if I do so. But I'm trying to become a bit more comfortable with collaboration- thank you for the inspiration, Sophia!

  9. Sophia!!!! This is such a cool post for me, because I'm in the middle of so many collab efforts right now, but I am like you and oftentimes feel like I can do it all better by my BIG GIRL self.

That's never as fun as we think it's going to be.

Your internship sounds AMAZING!!! Like, super amazing.

And this post reminded me that I'd love to collaborate with you! I think that you emailed me about something forever ago, but it must have gone into the disorganized part of my brain. I WOULD LOVE TO!!! But as I'm working on my own internship, I'll email you later in the summer :)

    SUCH A GREAT POST!!!

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
