Explore Us: Episode 08 feat. Olivia @ Summer Of 1999 - Joy In The Little Things

ASDFGHJKL HELLO THERE. Today is episode eight of the Explore U.S./Explore Us series and guess who’s here to conquer my blog?? Olivia from Summer of 1999! (Now you know why I’m asdfghjkling hahaha.) EVERYONE GIVE HER WAFFLES AND A HUGE WELCOME. Olivia is one of my blogging role models – she is an awesome human who constantly inspires me to keep exploring, keep going deeper, and SHE ALSO INTRODUCED ME TO TWENTY ONE PILOTS. (This is big deal, sir. Obviously.) Thank you again, Olivia, for being a part of this!

Shout out to Abbie for being one of my favorite bloggers ever and asking me to guest post. This is how I feel about that: alskjflsdkjflksdjfkl. But that’s pretty much how I feel about everything, so. Anyway, “let’s get down to business!” (Mulan? Anyone???)

01. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING?

OKAY. So, this whole past semester/year, I’ve been thinking about what it means to take the time to enjoy the little things and find joy in the ordinary. But this summer I really wanted to focus on it in a more… focused… way. (I need sleep, guys. I’m fine.) There’s just so much that we take for granted and forget to appreciate, and I want to take that back.

02. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT FINDING JOY IN THE LITTLE THINGS?

Mostly, just finding joy in them. Hahahaha, having too much fun with this. But I want to go through life living like every breath is a gift and every heartbeat is a miracle, because it is. I love the inspiration that flows from it. I love the gratitude that comes from it. I love the enlightenment that it provides, too. Like, there’s so much that I don’t notice and consciously reminding myself of all there is to be happy about or appreciate or just notice – it’s eye opening.

03. WHO OR WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START EXPLORING THIS?

Myself? Not in a prideful way, though! More like I was surprised at how I let the mundane and routine of my life get in the way of my joy and bring me down. Or even the upsets to my routine! It was kind of a lose-lose situation. There’s this quote: “There was no way I was born to just pay bills and die.” AND I FEEL THAT. But, even right now, that doesn’t have to mean doing something incredible and extravagant. Maybe it just means living radically in the everyday by choosing joy. I was tired of the intellectual knowledge that I was incredibly privileged and blessed and living an amazing life, without actually enjoying it – the work, the learning, the hurting, the healing, and everything in between.

04. DO YOU EVER FALL SHORT OF FINDING JOY? HOW DO YOU GET BACK ON TRACK?

PSH. Is this even a question??? I’m pretty sure we all do – if not, let me know in the comments – hahahahahahaha. What most often helps is to pray (basically applicable to every life situation). But just listing and thanking Him specifically for anything and everything is so refreshing. It’s also for some reason easy to find joy when doing something to make someone else happy or serve them in some way.

05. WHAT IS THE 'EXPECTATION VS REALITY' OF LIVING THIS WAY?

Ummmm. Waking up one day and feeling like it’s going to be the best day ever and then one thing going wrong and plunging you into a bad mood. *rolls eyes* Classic. It’s so hard to intentionally choose joy in those situations.

06. NAME THREE PEOPLE/THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP EXPLORING THIS:

  • God and His Word.
  • Everyone in the world who doesn’t have their basic needs of humanity met, much less all that I have been given.
  • Abbie/you guys! Because she asked me to guest post and brought this topic to mind, so now that it’s out there, and you guys are actually reading it, I feel more motivated, accountable, supported, and inspired!!!!! SUCH A WIN.

07. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THIS?

Don’t set unreasonable goals for yourself. It’s a process. Every day, every hour, every minute you choose is a new opportunity and a fresh start to look for and appreciate the small things in life. Don’t get discouraged that you’re not suddenly an unfailingly grateful saint overnight. Give yourself some grace (WWJD, AM I RIGHT), and lean on Jesus. It’s all good.

don’t leave this blog until you olivia some love in the comments, people!

xoxo,
abbiee

  7. This is such an amazing and WORTHY goal. We (or I)take the little moments for granted WAY too often. I was just thinking in need this morning I basically have a perfect life. Yet, I find myself in discontentment so often. Thanks for your words. :)

  8. Ahahaha I love this. It's truly humbling when you start to find joy in the fact that your lungs are rising and falling and your heart is pumping in your chest. And though these are simple, you start to delve into the complexities of biology and the fact that your heart does this work 24/7 and ahhhhhh your brain explodes with the sheer unexplored depths of the character and genius of God. Seriously. It's like, joy in the simple things, which is SUCH a worthy goal, suddenly becomes, without our permission, joy in the extremely complex things. Like you're like, dude, what a beautiful flower. And then you're like dude, the fact that that flower is growing here, in this soil is crazy. Dude, the fact that the flower is this color is insane! Dude, the fact that this flower HELPS MAKE HONEY FOR ME blows my mind (I love honey). Dude, the fact that this flower pumps out oxygen for me to breathe???? The fact that I'm BREATHING??? The fact that I let out carbon dioxide which this flower breathes????????? AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH IT IS ENDLESS.

so this was exciting for me. Sorry for the extremely crazy comment....welcome to my brain.... the exit door is the second door on your left yes sorry bai.

OH lol and since Veggie Tales was my childhood, I've always had this one line stick with me and I think it was something like "When I remember that God is still good it helps me not to be so frustrated" or something like that.

CAN'T BELIEVE I'M SAYING VEGGIE TALES HAS GOOD LIFE LESSONS BUT YEAH.

  17. Olivia, I'M FINALLY READING THIS AMAZING POST FJDKSALFJDSLKJFKDALSJ

I feel ya girl. Finding joy in the little things revolutionizes my existence. It's the moments. The sunsets. The putting kitties waking you up. But it's oftentimes hard to pause. I've found myself speeding past the little things this summer. I've been so goal focused and busy that I haven't rested in the joy of God. This stinks, and my prayer right now is to find rest. Soul rest. Body rest. Mind rest. Rest.

Your post inspired me to what God's placed in my mind today. Maybe my late reading of this post is for a purpose :)
