Explore Us: Episode 09 feat. Megan @ Pen and Ink - Writing

Can y’all believe we’re already at episode NINE of the Explore U.S./Explore Us series?? I PROBABLY CAN’T EVEN. (Also are you stalking my travels on Instagram? BC YOU SHOULD.) Today is especially exciting because the super talented Megan from Pen and Ink is here to conquer my blog! EVERYONE GIVE HER WAFFLES AND A HUGE WELCOME. She is brilliant, motivational, and inspires me to keep writing and blogging. Thank you again, Megan, for being a part of this!

01. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING?

Right now I am really getting more involved in writing. I am trying to develop my writing style and figure out what kind of things I like to do best in that area...whether it's novels, blogging, short stories, etc. So yeah. It's a work in progress!

02. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT WRITING?

I love being able to express myself with written words. You can say a thousand things and have all of your words be lost, but when you write words on a page, they will always be there. I love exploring new words and ideas, and letting my creativity go wild on a piece of paper. Also, I find it funny that writers can make up pretty much anything from their imagination and have people wanting to read it. I mean, who doesn't want that kind of hobby?? :p

03. WHAT DOES YOUR WRITING PROCESS LOOK LIKE?

I actually laughed when I saw this question. Honestly, I don't have an official writing process that I go by. Once I have an idea for a project, I will just sit down and write! I used to outline everything, but I found myself really frustrated with my work, and I eventually began to dislike my idea the longer I worked on it. I prefer to write either early in the morning or late at night, and I work off of my random bursts of inspiration and energy.

04. HOW DO YOU REACT TO PEOPLE WHO THINK YOU SHOULD BE EXPLORING SOMETHING ELSE?

I try to be polite when people tell me that what I'm exploring isn't a "real thing," or isn't worth it. It doesn't happen a lot, but when it does, I will usually just explain to them that I am doing what I love, and I wouldn't change that. I really try not to let the opinions of other people discourage me from pursuing writing, but it is hard! I'll admit that I have been swayed a few times by others' opinions or advice on my future, but what I do is also completely my decision and it is what I really feel like I should be doing right now.

05. WHAT IS THE 'EXPECTATION VS REALITY' OF BEING A WRITER?

Oh, I LOVE this question! :D

For me personally, the expectation was a mental picture of me sitting at my desk by an open window, with a soft breeze blowing through the room and my imagination flying on golden wings. Then, the words just sort of writing themselves, with such a delicate and beautiful writing style that within a month or so, I would have a perfect novel that I would someday be famous for. (That shows that my imagination was indeed flying while I forgot all about the editing.) :p

The reality? It's hard. SO HARD. Once you finally think of an idea for a project, you have to find the words. While writing, you go between loving and hating your idea, your writing style, and your life...all within the span of a week. (There is a lot of crying and hair pulling involved at this stage.) Once you are done writing, your project needs some heavy editing. *more crying and hair pulling* Oh, and a perfect novel is not going to happen in a month...unless you are a superhero writer. (If you are, please come visit me because that would be super cool ok?) :)

06. NAME THREE PEOPLE/THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP EXPLORING THIS:

My parents have encouraged me so much. There are many times when I am really discouraged about my writing, and I often wonder if I should do something different, but they have really helped me re-gain my perspective and encouraged me to pursue what I love. I'm super grateful for them. :) <3

My blogging peeps (and their writing)! Honestly, all of my fellow bloggers and online friends are such beautiful souls. Everyone is such a HUGE encouragement, and I love the network of writers online! You guys rock! *confetti and cookies for you all*

My best friend and I used to write books together when we were younger. Even now that we live so far apart, she is such a huge motivator, and every time we talk about writing, she inspires me to really do my best and be proud of my work. She is serious and grounded, and I have learned so much from her. She's a huge blessing. <3

07. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING WRITING?

When you have an idea, WRITE IT DOWN. (Basically drop everything and write it somewhere.) I have learned this lesson the hard way. When you have a great idea for a novel, blog post, or anything you want to write, NEVER rely on your memory to save it until later. You will forget. Then you will feel like crying when you finally sit down to write and you can't remember it. When that idea comes up, write it in a notebook. Or, if you are in a place where you don't have a notebook, write it on a receipt, your hand, your face, your foot, the walls...ANYWHERE. You won't regret it. (Unless you write it on the walls. Yeah, please don't do that.) No pen available? Make up a song about it and sing it until you get to one! *pauses loud singing to ask a random lady for a pen* Psstt... Another piece of advice: always carry a pen with you.

I will also encourage you not to give up. Believe me, you will hit a point where you will want to throw away your notebooks and never write another word again. But if this is something that you really love, stay with it. If you are in a creative rut, find a friend and talk to them about it! Like I said before, there is also a network of so many writers and bloggers that are incredible with inspiration, advice, and encouragement. Push through the ruts, take a break if you need it, and love every minute of your creative bursts. You can do this. You are a writer, and that in itself is amazing. <3

  4. YESSSS WRITING. This is the topic I've been waiting for!

I also have a very....scattered.....creativity process. Usually I pants my way through my works, then get stuck about a third of the way in because I didn't plan anything. I've been trying to work more with outlines of late, though, and it's helping.

My fellow bloggers are a huge source of inspiration for me as well! Seeing everyone else's awesome work really motivates me to get off my butt and start writing. xD Pinterest is another place I find a ton of inspiration.

Oh, man. You don't know how many times I've lost hold of an idea because I figured "Eh, I'll remember this, I don't need to write it down." XD I was obviously quite wrong.

I'll have to check out Megan's blog!
