Explore Us: Episode 05 feat. Katie Grace @ A Writer's Faith - Time Management

Y’ALL. I’m a long way from home (keep up with travels on the instagram! woot woot) and I’m having AN ASDFGHJK AWESOME TIME. But I can’t babble on today because today is episode five of the Explore U.S./Explore Us series and my supremely awesome and talented friend Katie Grace from A Writer’s Faith is here to tackle the blog! *confetti* EVERYONE GIVE HER WAFFLES AND A HUGE WELCOME. Katie Grace is fabulous at everything she does and Y’ALL NEED TO GO FOLLOW HER if you don’t already. Thank you again, Katie Grace, for being a part of this!

01. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING?

Dude, I’m exploring so much. My life feels like it has exploded with new opportunities and excitement, and I think I might be going a little crazy. In a good way. Sort of. In an, “I’m-a-writer-so-it’s-completely-okay-to-be-a-little-crazy” way. (I realize I make no sense, but just go with it. ‘kay?)

About a month ago I started working at Starbucks. (which means lots of free coffee and lemonade and junky treats. Aw yes.) I’m trying to finish editing beta reader comments on my book. And now in July for Camp NaNoWriMo I’m editing a new book which is a bit terrifying. (A bit = a very lot and I might die.)

I also have blog posts, Church, friends, and general life stuff to deal with. So, right now, I’m currently exploring time management. I’m used to having my afternoons and evenings open, and with that time gone, it’s been a rather dramatic change.

02. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT TIME MANAGEMENT?

(interpreting this as: what do you love about being busy?)

My first reaction to this question was, “HA. Nothing. I want my afternoons back.”

But after I thought about it some… I think it’s been good. Hard, but good. I’m forced to think ahead and plan out my week. (I’m not a planner. Let me have my freedom and impulsiveness run loose, please.) I’m also forced to make the most out of my time. Which means avoiding procrastinating.

03. WHO OR WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START EXPLORING THIS?

UM. I don’t think there was a who, really. Or a what (besides being busy). It was mostly my own motivation to get things done on time and try to quit procrastinating for once. Is that possible? I don’t know. Still figuring that out.

04. HOW DO YOU HANDLE TIME MANAGEMENT BETWEEN WORK AND LIFE?

STILL LEARNING THIS TO BE HONEST. I work around 20-25 hours a week. Which isn’t a lot, but I’m an inexperienced little writer and need to allow plenty of time for procrastination.

(not to mention that I sleep for most of the morning. Oops. #nightowlandproud)

Right now I cope by staying up later. Is this the best decision? No. Does it work? Yes. I’m most awake and able to focus at night. I have no choice but to take advantage of the creativity when it strikes.

05. DO YOU EVER FEEL LIKE YOU DON'T HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO DO EVERYTHING (WRITING, BLOGGING, WORK, SCHOOL, AND MORE?) HOW DO YOU COPE WITH IT ALL?

All the time.
I mostly cope by crying. (kidding. Kind of.)

Lately, instead of crying (or along with crying), I’ve been making a to-do list. To-do lists scare me, because I look at them and think “AHH THERE’S SO MUCH TO DO I NEED TO TAKE A NAP.”
The to-do list has helped, though. It helped me remember to write this blog post. And along with every to-do list task on my list, I put an estimated amount of time it will take me to do that task. When I have a half an hour to spare, I can easily look at my list and pick a task that I will be able to finish in time.

06. WHAT IS THE 'EXPECTATION VS REALITY' OF TIME MANAGEMENT?
Expectation: I sit at my perfectly clean desk, a neatly written to-do list by my side. I have scheduled my day from editing, procrastinating, bathroom breaks, to lunchtime. I have everything sorted out, and there is just enough time for me to get everything done.

Reality: I lay on the floor, computer in front of me. Yes, I COULD be editing. Yes, I COULD be blogging. There are many things I could be doing that are productive, but what am I doing instead?

Staring at the ceiling. Scrolling through Twitter. Thinking through a blog post about ‘time management’ and instead getting distracted by pizza.

Basically: moaning about how I keep procrastinating and attempting to do things about it but failing.

07. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THIS?

IT’S GOING TO BE EXTREMELY HARD AND WILL PROBABLY BE SOMETHING THAT YOU WILL EXPLORE FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE.
(I feel like those are more words of doom. Not quite the feel you were looking for Abbiee, yeah? Sigh. Sorry.)
But, really. Understand that improving time management a process. Your life will keep changing. Seasons will come and go—school will stop, but work may come. It’s good to figure out what’s best for you in this season of life. Plan out a week, but try not to stress yourself out and look months in advance. (focusing too much on the future can get scary.)

don’t leave this blog until you katie grace some love in the comments, people!

xoxo,
abbiee

  1. AHH KATIE! I am soooo the same with time management. Sometimes it works to just live, and take advantage of those times where you can binge-work (like writing 10k in one day, for instance).
Thanks for this interview and guest post, Abbiee and Katie! <3 You girls are fabulous!

Dude, I feel ya!! I literally don't seem to get inspired for novel writing until it's like, 11 p.m. Why is it that I wake up nice and early to write, but then drift into distraction? Also your expectation vs. reality is so on point. #same :)

    1. I'm so fascinated by learning about other people's writing processes! Like mine is the exact opposite xD When I'm really intensely writing a book, I'll wake up at 4:30 AM and just go at it like a beast and some of my best writing has happened in the early morning. I'M A DELIRIOUS FISH AT NIGHT. xD

      KATIE ROCKS DOESN'T SHE <3

  11. Love this. I am a to-do list freak, but I feel like once summer hits, I get into a "ugh all i want to do is read books and waste my time" mood. I make to-do lists, but the idea of writing down time slots is new to me! I think you have more of a genius idea there than you realize, Katie. (light bulbs are flashing above my head right now...) Great post!! :)
    I'm loving this series, Abbiee! :) <333

  16. the extent to which i relate to this post is uncanny.

    scary.

KATIE I FEEL YOU SO MUCH!!!! I've been pressed under this weight of time and not being able to get everything done that I want. (And yes, my first coping method is crying too. No shame.) But I'm discovering more and more that what I can't do isn't as important as what I'm doing right now.

If I'm finally going and reading blogs for the first time in like three weeks because I've been so scattered and spread thin lately, that's okay. I chose to mentor students and dance and sleep. That meant that I couldn't blog.

    And that's okay.

For however awesome and complex God made us, we still can't do everything.

I found it super encouraging how you are honest and wise about time management. Because it only gets worse in college. *insert sound of doom* (Not really. But really.)

XDDDDD also this: "But I'm discovering more and more that what I can't do isn't as important as what I'm doing right now." <<< like ok so you said that you're mentoring students CAN YOU COME AND MENTOR ME?? BC U R SO WISE OMG HELP

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
