Explore Us: Episode 07 feat. Hannah @ Grace In Everything - Living In The Soul

Time for episode seven of the Explore U.S./Explore Us series! I’m SO FREAKING EXCITED today because today I’m featuring my spectacular soul-sister, Hannah from Grace In Everything! EVERYONE GIVE HER WAFFLES AND A HUGE WELCOME. She is downright awesome, not to mention suuuuuper wise and inspired. Thank you again, Hannah, for being a part of this!

01. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING?

I am exploring my soul. It is a word that we don’t use often, for we almost fear using such a word. It holds a holiness to it that we don’t understand, but I seek to know it. I seek to live in my soul.

The soul is the core of who we are, the center of our existence. It is where Jesus does His constant work and the Spirit calls us to something more than we can see. The soul is the place where we can rest safe from the battle of sin in the world (see Romans 7:21-25). It is where the will, thoughts, and emotions of our personality meet together to form our identity.

But how can we know our soul? How can we untangle this mess of physical necessities, emotional responses, cognitive tendencies, and the still small voice of Jesus calling us home?

This, my friends, is the playground of the soul.

02. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT THIS EXPLORATION?

Deuteronomy 6:5 says “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” We know about loving God with our heart and strength, but what about loving God with our soul?

In discovering my soul, I learn how to better love God. I have found this unexplainable joy in Christ that appreciates the little moments and also sees that big picture of God’s glory. I learn how to know myself at the deepest level and give those firmly rooted sins over to Jesus.

03. WHO OR WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START EXPLORING THIS?

The Spirit guided me into this way of soul-searching and deep-loving of God. But Emily Freeman’s book Simply Tuesday opened my eyes to a way of living that thought about the soul. I don’t remember reading something that talked about the soul before reading Emily’s lovely book. Please buy it and mark it up by highlighting every other sentence, because it is AH-MAZ-ING!

04. DO YOU EVER FEEL TOO SCATTERED/BUSY TO RECOGNIZE GOD'S PRESENCE? HOW DO YOU GET BACK ON TRACK?

Oh, how I wish that I could always live in joy of God’s workings in my soul. But I CAN’T. I DON’T. I fail so often and cloud my soul with rushed to-do lists and justifiable activities. Even rest can distract me, because it takes work to discover the soul, and sometimes I prefer finishing Winter or Instagraming waffles. (Important stuff, you know.)

This is when I must force myself to “be still and know” that God is God (Psalm 46:10). He is with me in the hectic and tiring times of life as well as the dry, normal periods of this journey. I must remind my soul of the truth, even if my emotions feel too thin or too messy.

To do this, I set aside time on Sunday afternoons to simply be with God. I read over His words again and again and pray with urgency. I journal lengthy entries and let thoughts rise up from my soul into my mind. This time is a place that is safe for my soul, a regular appointment with my inner being. I call them “soul sessions.”

05. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNED FROM THIS PROCESS?

I have found Jesus in every corner of life.

The gospel is in the story of Tangled. God’s majesty is in the sky. Jesus’ love is in the tasks that He’s given me to do for His glory. The Spirit is with me during the times where I feel insecure or inadequate.

Immanuel. God with us. Better yet, God in us.

“The glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” (Colossians 1:27)

I have learned that there is a forever center for my being that does not depend upon this world or even myself. It rests fully on Jesus, and that is my joy even when my crush doesn’t like me back or the world moves too fast. I have learned joy. And I never want to go back.

06. NAME THREE PEOPLE/THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP EXPLORING THIS:

07. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THE SAME THING?

Develop eyes that see. Eyes that see into our own souls and find in there grace overflowing. Eyes that see the moments that God gives for us to interact with His kingdom for His glory. Eyes that see how the world influences our souls for good and bad. Eyes to see the times where we are invited to be still and listen. Eyes that see chances given to us to live with this joy rooted in our souls.

Practically speaking, I find that asking “why,” talking to other soul-seekers, not fearing the word “soul,” spending time with God and your inner being, and interacting with the kingdom of God during the times-in-between gives me eyes that see more clearly. Some of my most memorable soul moments weren’t with an open Bible in front of me but in the driver’s seat of my car after a long day. Any moment can be a seeing moment.

Oh, I pray that we would have eyes that see.

Be still my vision, o Lord of my heart.

  3. Woah. I don't know if I have thought about it this way but yes. Let us walk with eyes open, not to simply see the natural world, but to see the presence of God as revealed to us through the eyes of our soul. Why WOULDN'T we want to be in the state of a constant encounter with the Living God? So good.

    Plus, nice name. ;-)

    1. When I read this initially, I was on my mission trip and didn't have time to reply. But let me tell you that the people around me must have thought I was crazy because I was smiling/laughing/possibly crying with the encouragement that you gave me in the Lord! I had to go and try to explain to non-bloggers the encouragement blogging gives. They didn't understand.

      THANK YOU! PRAISE JESUS!
