Explore Us: Episode 03 feat. Rachel @ Silver Mess - Exploration

WELL WHAT DO YA KNOW?? Episode three of the Explore U.S./Explore Us series is already here!! Crazy, right? Be sure to follow along on Instagram to keep up with all my travels (friendly stalking is allowed – muahHAHA.) Today I’m featuring the one and only Rachel of Silver Mess! EVERYONE GIVE HER WAFFLES AND A HUGE WELCOME. Because she is one of my blogging role models, super creative and one of those REALLY BRIGHT stars you see just after sunset. ;) Thank you again, Rachel, for being a part of this!

01. WHAT IS ONE THING THAT YOU ARE CURRENTLY EXPLORING?

I am currently exploring exploration itself. Up until these past couple of years, I knew what I wanted to do with my life--I wanted to be a children's book author. Now, even though I'm pretty sure I'm going to end up as a children's book author eventually, I've been learning to explore other talents and venues and outlets for my imagination. I'm thinking of traveling more, and photography, and graphic design, and acting, and...so much stuff, man. So much stuff!! I don't even know how I'm supposed to choose just one thing.

02. WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT IT?

I love the fact that things aren't...settled. The fact that I have the liberty to figure things out and to continually change and evolve. I love that opportunity seems to be out there, and that I'm meeting new people and trying new things and it's constantly broadening my horizons. For example, I recently went to an open casting call of High School Musical 4, and even though I didn't get a callback, I met cool people and I had a really good time overall--and it made me want to audition and start acting, even though I'm kind of old to start.

03. WHO OR WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO START EXPLORING THIS?

I decided sophomore year that I needed to take a break from book writing. I didn't realize that I didn't have the experience or the skill to pursue publication just yet, and plus, I needed to focus on school. So I turned to blogging as a creative outlet, and even though my ideas haven't always panned out, I've just been mostly trying to maintain flexibility and keep an open mind. Who knows? I might end up as something completely different from what I imagined myself to be when I was twelve!

04. HOW DO YOU REACT TO PEOPLE WHO "DON'T APPROVE" OF WHAT YOU'RE DOING?

I usually just roll with it. My friends and family are more realistic, obviously, and it's hard to do something when everyone's criticizing you and telling you not to do it. But in the end, I just try to deflect the punches and not let things get to me too much...which usually doesn't happen, because I'm a sensitive person. But I'm learning how to deal with disapproval and with differences. And I admire people who have had a goal since they were five years old and who want to pursue it. I used to be that kid. But then I realized that life has so much more to offer than just meeting goals.

05. WHAT IS THE 'EXPECTATION VS REALITY' OF WHAT YOU DO?

I think there's this expectation that you can find adventure and explore things everywhere, and that you can always have adventures and stories. But for me? It's hard. My life is kind of mundane--I go to school every day, I do homework, etc. I have to consciously and physically explore and search. And sometimes it doesn't always pan out. Sometimes I do something, and it's totally boring and awful and I don't want to blog about it at all. But the times that I do discover things...that makes everything worth it.

06. NAME THREE PEOPLE/THINGS THAT INSPIRE YOU TO KEEP EXPLORING THIS:

My mom and dad have really encouraged me to go out and seek opportunity, as opposed to letting it come to me. And reading my Bible has honestly helped so much, because it makes me realize that there is more to life than just the motions, that God has a plan for me and for everyone...which is so bomb, if you think about it.

07. WHAT WORDS OF ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO SOMEONE WHO IS INTERESTED IN EXPLORING THE SAME THING?

Be content with where you are in life, but don't shy away from adventure and opportunity. Explore things. Experience things. Don't forget the meaning of why you're here. Make your own opportunities. And record your experiences.

  1. This is great, Rachel! I've recently realized that I've been taking my writing a bit too seriously in that I am worried that if I'm not good at it, I'm not going to be successful at all. So getting outside of my own little shell and exploring new things is a goal of mine this year. This is really inspiring! And congrats on exploring acting! I started late too, but I'm so glad I did. Isn't it an amazing creative outlet?!

  9. Aaargh I can't deal with these inspirational posts they are too perfect and I LOVE them too much. It's like someone opened my eyes and I saw what the world truly has to offer. This is especially important to me because in a year I will finish uni and I feel like I have to have everything figured out and that I have to have job and that job will be there for the rest of my life. I often forget about how amazing our world is and that I can explore it whenever I want and I don't need to have life figured out. Thank you girls. :)

  14. literally, rachel, when I think of cool bloggers YOU ARE AT THE TOP OF THE LIST. Like not even joking...you're so amazing <3
I really understand what you said about that life is mundane. Right now, it really feels that way. BUT I DON'T WANT TO WASTE MY SUMMER AWAY BY DOING NOTHING. Yet...I honestly can't do too much right now anyway. So I think that I'm learning to trust God even more with my life. He does have a plan, and it's sure to be a good one. LOVE THIS POST DUDE.

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
