Stay With Me

Remember that road we walked,
whitewashed and empty?
I thought you were just some random guy
who wanted someone to talk to.
But then you started reading my heart like a book
and it burned.
Oh, how it burned.

I didn't know how blind I was until you pulled off the covers
revealing a world of color and light and sound.
You talked to me, and I understood.
You unleashed your torrents of living water
and I was in over my head.

I couldn't.
I couldn't handle it.
So when dusk fell, I asked you to stop.
The flood was beautiful,
sweet and ravishing
everything I wanted it to be.
But it was just too much.
So I asked you to stay.

Stay here, with me.
Stay in this place of not knowing everything
but learning
and treading water
breathing hard, eyes wide,
astounded.
Partial ignorance,
partial understanding,
partial childlike wonder.

Stay.
And you did.

Remember that road we walked?
Before the beginning of time, that's what you were:
a guy who wanted someone to talk to.
Who wanted some hearts to light on fire.

Remember that road
to Emmaus?

Just a little something I’ve been meditating on lately. Playing with perspective, twisting the scriptures and unscrambling the jumble of theories that have polluted our wells of living water. Let’s become beginners again. Let’s go back to start, where we had no idea what anything was. Beautiful, blank canvasses, looking up at the night sky and being like, “Wow, Daddy. That’s a lotta stars.”

love,
abbiee

Florida + firelight + slow shutter speed = photos.
missing those palms like heck.

  3. This is one of the most beautiful pieces of writing I have ever read. I'm not just saying this to flatter. This is genuinely amazing. Something I'll come back and read a million times over. Something that I finished reading and said, "What... what did I just read?!"

    "Partial ignorance,
    partial understanding,
partial childlike wonder." <--- SO MUCH THIS

I've been getting frustrated lately because I don't understand it all and I feel like I'm failing. Not sure what I'm failing at, but it's the false idea that I'm a bad Christian if I don't get it all or if I have questions. But questions are good and when I start to get frustrated, I know I can trust Him to bring the answers when I need them and not a second too early or too late. Beautiful poem, Abbie, just beautiful.
