How to be a Better Blogger - Part 03, Episode 02: A Picture's Worth

It’s been a while since we got together to have a chat about blogging, hasn’t it? Fact is, I’ve been stuck in bed with the flu for the past few days (HINT: it hasn’t been very fun.) BUT! I’m starting to recover. THEREFORE, this situation calls for something a little special – like tea and strawberry cream scones. Can you manage that please? CHOP CHOP, I’m much too weak and fragile to do thingssss.

Read previous installments:

A thousand words.

Every blog post needs a picture. (Almost as much as a cowboy needs a horse, needs a horse, needs a horse…) Why? Well, because a) they help to tell a story b) they look nice in blog feed and c) I’m an attention-deficit 4-year-old who needs the illusion of dividers to make me feel like I’m not actually reading a novel.

I recently heard a photojournalist say that an image is the quickest way to impact a person with a thought or an idea – no words required, sometimes.

Pictures tell a story, just as much as words do. Make it a challenge – try to speak to your readers through imagery, not just text. You might be surprised by how interesting your blog posts turn out. (Both for you and said reader.) If you feel like your words aren’t delivering the whole story, add some pictures! Don’t leave your readers’ minds unattended…

When I set off to read a blog post, I need something to grab me (by the hair.) A block of text doesn’t do that – images do. The chances of me reading a blog post with an image are far greater than a blog post with no image.

 But how even.

Don’t go thinking that you need to crank up your photography skills or run out and buy a fancy DSLR camera. Although these are nice tools to have at your fingertips, they’re not at all necessary. Today, all you need is eyeballs, (check!) a taste for pretty things, (check!) and the cosmic miracle that is Pinterest. (Check…at your own risk.)

But Abbiee, isn’t that like…stealing? Naawww. If I’ve learned anything from being a blogger, it’s that people don’t mind you using their images as long as you link back to their website in a proper credit. I mean, think about it objectively: if someone used your image in their blog post with a little link that brought their readers to your blog, would you be offended? NOOO. It’s like free advertising. In fact, by using other people’s images, you’re doing them a favor.

What’s in my camera bag?

Aw, kind of you to ask. A couple of years ago, I saved up to buy a DSLR camera – a Canon Rebel T3i, to be exact. This camera is BEAUTIFUL, guys. I love it so so much. But if you know anything about shooting with a DSLR, you know that it’s all about the lenses. Over the years I’ve collected three lenses: this EFS 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens, which rarely leaves my camera when shooting still life stuff for my blog and Instagram (like this and this), this EFS 50mm f/1.8 macro lens which shoots beautiful up-close photography (like this and this) and was surprisingly inexpensive for the level of quality, and this EFS 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM wide angle which is a spectacular option for large-spectrum shots (like this and this) mostly on landscapes.

So yeah. That’s what’s in my camera bag – but REMEMBER! You don’t need fancy equipment to include photos in your blog posts. The options are endless. So get creative already, would ya??

What do you think about pictures in blog posts? Do they make life easier to handle?? What’s in YOUR camera bag? TALK TO MEH.

love,
abbiee

  1. PICTURES ARE AMAZING AND YOURS ARE ALWAYS PARTICULARLY AMAZING. *shrieks* I honestly looooove posts that make good use of photos. Like you said -- eye catching! And I'm definitely that 4yo with no attention span. Ahem. >_> It also just makes me like the post more because I have something PRETTY to look at. #shallowBookworm

Although, tbh, I'm very very cautious about the idea of using things off pinterest. I feel like, unless you directly get permission from the photographer than it's still kind of stealing? Idek about these things though. GREY AREA! *shrieks* I'm just super paranoid because I keep having people steal my photos. One of my friends told me about an instagram account that was just reposting my photos with zero credit. :( It had my watermark? But STILL. NO. CREDIT = BAD. But then, at the same time, when someone shares my photo and credits me on instagram or something it IS nice because I get the traffic and followers. SO YEAH I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN AND I'LL SHUSH NOW BECAUSE I'M 100% RAMBLING.

Amazing post as always. ;D *whispers* I don't even have a camera bag. XD Just a Nikon D3200 that trots about my room trying not to get eaten by my dog. AHem.

Also get better soon!! *gives you scones*

    1. *SQUEALS AND FLAILS* gaaaah omg girl thank you thank you!!! THAT MEANS SO MUCH FROM YOU OMG. ♥ YESYESYES LET'S BE 4 YEAR OLDS TOGETHER. xD seriously prettiness to look at in a post is PARAMOUNT. so paramount. *sighs contentedly* ohhhh I see -- yeah, I think you're probably right! XD I usually air on the side of "don't worry about it and probably nobody will be offended/annoyed/ever see that you used their pictures??" but maybe I'm deeply flawed. x) but yes, it's always the best idea to give proper credit and lots of it. ^.^ EVEN THEN, sometimes people don't like it! in which case I'm just like, "kk bro I'll take it down now hush and go have a cakepop or something." XD

OOOHH NIKON D3200 SOUNDS SHINNYYYY DUDE. *salivates* XD (yeah I know I'm supposed to be all loyal to Canon and not swoon for Nikon?? but let's face it: I AM LOYAL TO NOTHING.) also I'm such an overprotective little control freak mouse that a camera bag is absolutely necessary, but yet I probably put my camera through way more dangerous situations. XD *cough* ANYWAY THANK YOU FOR THE SCONES, DEAR. AND FOR READING!!

  3. YES PICTURES ARE A MUST UGH MONOTONY

Also, sorry to hear you've been feeling ill! I hope you're feeling better!

Pinterest is great. I've only used others' images a few times, but I was very particular about finding the original source and having a click through link ON the picture as well as UNDER the picture. A Facebook page stole a photo of Kai once and I was...flattered...but at the same time was like, "Yeah. This is mine." In their defense, I don't believe they were the original thief because my Facebook is private and the only other place I put it was Tumblr so...somebody did evil..

It's not really my camera bag because my mother is the photographer of the bunch, but she has a Canon Rebel T3i as well, but she mostly uses her Canon 7D. Her lenses are a 58mm, a 28-135mm, and also a 18mm macro lense that we haven't really had occasion nor ability to use XD I think she mainly uses the 58mm?? I don't know, she takes the pictures, I edit them. I really want a Nikon D3500 and a 18-270mm Tamron lense to film with, but the Sony handycam does a sufficient job!

    1. I'm feeling soooo much better, thank you sister!! ♥ MMM YES. I always try to find to original source of the photo, too. also CANNOT STAND IT when someone pins a photo from a blog feed's HOME PAGE?? LIKE, WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE WHERE DID THEY COME FROM??? Because then you try to track down the original source and you can just never ever find it and all hope is lost, basically. XD blaaah. tsk tsk, Facebook eats mindless evil photo thief deeds. :'(

ASIDJALLSKDFNFKSD YOUR MOM HAS A CANON REBEL T3I I'M FANGIRLING KAY. that is literally awesome. x) aaaaaaah. ♥ mmmm yes to all those lenses. The one you want to buy sounds really sweet. And I've heard a lot a good things about the Nikon D3500. all I know is that all the pics of you and your fabulous ponies are BEAUTEOUS. thank you for reading, Ashlyn!! ;D

  4. I love photos in blog posts :) Without photos, my eyes just can't handle it. I especially love gifs. They're playful and spice up the blog medium a little bit :D Though sometimes a post without photos can be powerful, if it's short and poetic. But usually, I use photos. Because they are lifesavers :)

    1. YES YES YES I AGREE 100%. GIFs are super fun (and I'm not at all obsessed with them, no, not me, not here, why do you ask...?? XD) Basically my eyes cannot handle it either. TOO MUCH WORDS NOT ENOUGH DISTRACTIONNNNN. thank you for reading, Erin dear!! ♥

  5. I've started using graphics lately! Except I'm too lazy to get my camera out and take actual pictures of my (not many) books! So I just use blue and yellow. Kind of boring, but they'll change..... someday. Anyway - Pinterest is amazing, but I don't go on it much because my feed is all clogged up with stuff inspired by what I pinned when I was a Pinterest fetus! (i.e. ugly disney princesses (I have NO idea what I was thinking), ugly fonts from a time when I had no taste)...
And lots of people are visual learners, so pictures, in fact, can convey a thousand words! (Except maybe not one thousand. Words = better! - coming from a book addict)

    1. OMG A PINTEREST FETUS AHAAHAHA WILTING. XD I know exactly what you mean, though!! Unfortunately I'm on Pinterest so much it's become far too accustom to my interests and habits and ALL THE MORE ADDICTIVE. So be wise (unlike me) and KEEEP AWAAAAYYYY *flails sword* (i'm delirious don't mind me) xD

EEEP that's so cool that you're getting into making graphics!! I lovelovelove making graphics but it takes a lot of practice and mostly observation. me and my sister always try to detect new trends before they get "big" in the marketing world. XD it's kind of fun. thank you so much for reading, Helen!! YOU ROCK. ♥

  7. YES MA'AM. I strongly agree with this. Like it's actually kinda bad I feel like I'm so attention deficient and everything, but it's definitely true. Much more likely to read a post broken up by images. (especially pretty ones;)
PS Your photos are always 100% pinterest worthy and gorgeous.

You're seriously the perfect person to post about this. Like, YOUR PHOTOS ARE ALWAYS SO GORGEOUS I'M SO JEALOUS. They're absolutely stunning I can't even.

I've reallyyyyyyy needed this post. Like, my photography isn't all that great, BUT PINTEREST IS LIFE. I'm always terrified to use it because I have this whole fear that I won't give credit correctly and then I'll get sued or something xD Because if you haven't noticed I'm an easily stressed little pineapple.

  12. Aww, I'm so sorry your feeling down! My whole family has been sick with the flu (or something or other), and I seem to be the only one who is feeling well (that may be because I came down wth a case of acute bronchitis over winter break, so I already got my fair share of sickness).

I totally agree with you; a post always needs a picture (may I just add that all of yours are phenomanal) to lighten up the mood. Your tips on this series are oh so lovely. :)

Hope you feel better soon! I am sending you a package of strawberry cream scones along with some waffles, made by yours truly. Enjoy! <3

  13. I love blogs with pretty pictures because it makes them more exciting and... well pretty. :D Also, I personally don't like to read a plain block of text. That's just boring. And I agree with you that people don't need expensive equipment. I mean, smartphones have quite a good cameras nowadays. I bought compact camera this winter and I must admit it's more fun to play around with the composition and the light and all that stuff. And sometimes I have no idea what I'm doing so people shouldn't be intimidated by photography. So yeah, pictures for me are important. :)

Photography is an art so there's really no right or wrong way to do it. ;) Thank you for reading, Simone!
