How to be a Better Blogger - Part 02, Episode 03: Resizing Images

HEY YOU WITH THE WAFFLE. I have a short and sweet crash course in resizing images today!! Nothing fancy, nothing long-winded, and nothing incredibly special. (But definitely including Downton GIFs. As is our custom. Heh.) And speaking of Downton Abbey, I didn’t realize that when you buy the whole season on Amazon Instant Video you get the Christmas special right away?? (Us people are too impatient to wait for March 6th to slug around.) If anyone else has seen the last episode (ever! WAAAAA) let’s blab about it in the comments! I thought it was gloriously satisfying. :) NOW BACK TO BUSINESS.

Read previous installments:

The Smudge Disorder

I am what most people would call a perfectionist. I like everything to be just so and if it’s not? WELL THEN I AM ANNOYED. And you know what I do when I am annoyed.* I can relate to Mr. Carson when there is a smudge on the silver and Mrs. Hughes tells him that nobody will ever notice it but he will know that it’s there and that makes all the difference. (No, I don’t have a GIF for that don’t make me cry.)

*wreak havoc on the nations, my dear.

Perfectionism may be wholly unnecessary at times, but not always. In fact, it usually makes everything right in the world.

Part of this perfectionism – or what I am lovingly referring to as the smudge disorder – is having images look flawlessly symmetrical within my blog posts. For me, it’s a must. Everything looks ship-shape this way and that’s exactly how I like it.

Margins, margins, margins.

Resizing images to fit your blog post dimensions isn’t hard. In fact, it’s super easy and I’m going to delve into it here. (BECAUSE I’M A GEEK. You guys have been warned.) There was a time when I used the preset dimensions that blogger offers (small, medium, large, extra-large, etc.) but not anymore. I find these presets just a little too small for my liking. (BUT if one of Blogger’s dimension presets happens to cosmically align with your blog post dimensions and everything looks cool to you, then go for it! All that matters is that your blog looks good.)
However, if you want to go with the route of resizing your images by hand (the way I do it) then here’s what you need to figure out: what are your blog post dimensions? [For example, mine are 750 pixels.]

If using Blogspot, go to: dashboard > template > customize > adjust widths

Next, it’s time to resize your images! To do this, I use PicMonkey (which is the answer to world peace BUT I won’t bore you guys with a full-length review. NOT YET, anyway. Muaha.) Open an image to edit > resize > enter your post dimensions > apply > save. It’s that quick and easy! (read in an Anthony Sullivan voice omg.)

You don’t want a blank space, baby.

Holy smokes did I just misquote a Taylor Swift song?? I THINK I DID. SEND HELP. (And waffles because I’m running kind of low.) Nobody wants a giiiiaaaaant space of nothing between each photo in a blog post, right? Well here’s how to fix that: PLAY AROUND.  Seriously, no two blog designs are alike (they are like snowflakes and thumbs and M&Ms in that respect. WHAT, you didn’t know that NO TWO M&MS ARE ALIKE?? Oh my gosh happy revolutionized life, my dear.)

In my blog posts, I delete the space altogether – and my layout looks just lovely.

WELL GUYS, THAT’S ALL I HAVE TO SAY. Hopefully you’re all still awake at this point. If so, you deserve a waffle and quite possibly a new Sharpie.

Did any of this make sense?? Because I honestly have no idea if I’m good at writing tutorial-style posts. Does it annoy YOU if pictures don’t cosmically align? If not, can you teach me how to not care about these things??? And DO YOU HAVE THE SMUDGE DISORDER??

love,
abbiee

  2. This was EXTREMELY HELPFUL. I am about as computer savvy as a baby monkey with no thumbs and every. Single. Post. I struggle with how to orient my pictures. I hate it. (This is why often I have only one picture. It solves a lot of problems) but this seems so simple to do! And wonderful! I shall attempt pronto.

  4. IT MAKES SENSE TO MEEEEEE. And I 100% agree. *nods* I mostly like the no blank space thingy, although I only recently started doing it on my blog?!? So like I have a zillion archived post where the picture is tiny. *cries* Sometimes I think about going back and fixing up all my old formatting? AND THEN I THINK "SERIOUSLY CAIT NO" BECAUSE AGH.

I, too, have thought about going back to old posts and reformatting things but then I'm like, "AIN'T NOBODY GOT TIME FOR THAT." Especially you, I mean...don't you have like 156128766512 tea and scone appointments to get to??? you superhuman, you. ;)

  5. YES, this makes me happy! I too have to smudge disorder and I do believe I will die if everything is not PERFECT! I definitely agree that you must mess around to get things the way you want. That's how I fixed a lot of little things that bothered me, like what you talked about in this tutorial! And like, everything you said you do, like no space between pictures, and adjusting widths, I already do! But do not think for one second I figured that stuff out on my own, oh no. My sisters helped. I am not what you would call "tech-savvy." Not in the least. Or, I didn't use to be. I've gotten better.

  8. YOUR TUTORIALS ARE THE BOMB. so don't worry, you make amazing sense and are flawless and perfect <3 XD so yeah, this was super helpful and all. for me, since i'm just like WAYYYYYY too lazy to resize my pics on the AMAZING picmonkey, i just make them all the original size and then i have this code i put in my template that automatically makes all the pics fit the perfect way on the blogpost. WOOOT. although, i only recently started that, sooo......yep.

WAFFLES? WAFFLES. i'm currently like not too happy with my waffles situation since i have a waffle maker (and it's a heart shaped waffle maker, no less. like it makes waffles in heart shapes. crazy cool.) and it makes all my waffles flat and not puffy and crispy. ARGHDGSFGDSKGHSDGSDGKSJ the struggle is so real.

BUT WAFFLES ROCK. And omg a heart shaped waffle I'M MELTING THIS IS GLORIOUS. ♥ I need a heart shaped waffle. Now is a good time. ;)

HAHAHAHAHA THIS HAPPENS TO ME TOO AND I HATE IT SO MUCH. (and I sometimes feel kind of spammy for having so many google accounts? meh) and then I've already hit publish on the comment and I'm like, "NOOOO THEY'RE NOT GOING TO RECOGNIZE MEEEE." but don't worry I only know one Autumn so I figured that it was you. ;) aAHAHA: "okay let me go hide in the deepest part of the ocean." 10. Okay, thank you for explaining how to find out what size to resize photos too. It makes 100% sense, and I'm going to try it, because I've been discontent with those blogger preset sizes for a while now. And yes, I'm a perfectionist. :)

  11. Yes, yes, YES!!! I totally suffer from the smudge disorder! I cannot tell you how much I struggled with getting my photos to align. I manually resize them when I'm editing on Picmonkey (which is like an angel that has decended from heaven) and then just click the original size option Blogger has. We perfectionists have to work together! :)

    p.s. I am expecting those waffles. ;)

  13. Picmonkey is FABULOUS! One day I will treat myself to Royale and all my dreams will come true! Also smudge disorder is a known disease. Many suffer from it, but who knows? A cure will be found one day.... meanwhile we will happily prance along, having fabulous aesthetics and great graphics! Also margins and image sizes are something that I have actually managed to teach myself, and boy, do I feel dorky! But it's in a triumphant way (I learned something! God forbid!), so it's cool! I LOVE fabulous bloggers who try to spread helpful blogger tips!

  15. This is really good advice. I was struggling with images since I start taking them myself but then I discover a CSS code that makes my pictures the exact width as my blog post area when I select the original size in the draft and it made my life a whole lot easier! Hopefully I explained it well, because I'm not good at explaining technical stuff :D But this is definitely the way I would go before I found out about HTML and all that crazy stuff. And also, this way is lot easier and you don't have to worry you're going to mess up your template. That's my biggest fear everytime I play around with HTML :D

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. OKAY THIS CODE SOUNDS LIKE MAGIC. I'm feeling like I'm behind the times now!! xD This is what Wordpress does automatically, but I had no idea that there was a CSS code for Blogger that did the same thing!! MUST LOOK INTO THIS. aHH yes that's true. I have this cute little custom template now so I probably won't be able to adjust any of the code. :/ But that sounds super handy for regular Blogger interfaces!! Thank you for sharing, Simone! And for reading! ♥

  16. Things Hannah Never Knew But Probably Should-

    1. How to resize images (guilty of just clicking x-large on blogger)

    2. The terminology "smudge disorder" (of which I assuredly have)

    3. My blog's dimensions or even the importance of this fact (I must check this out)

Speaking of my blogging needs, I need to read all of your wonderful tutorials that I missed due to life. And by the way, you write up these tutorials /wonderfully/.

    1. Yay! I'm so happy this post was helpful to you, Mackenzie! Hmm, I'm not sure about the spacing issue. I know that all blogs are different (even if they're powered by Blogspot) so my (kind of lame) advice would be to just play around with it a little bit?? Maybe go into the "text/html" view of the blog post and see if there are any tags (ie: < br / >) hanging out between your photos, creating a space.

p.s. GAAAH THANK YOU SO MUCH. ♥
