How to be a Better Blogger - Part 01, Episode 03: Get Social

Did I confuse you guys on Saturday? I think I made it sound like this is the last installment of my How to be a Better Blogger series, but it’s not. DO NOT FEAR, I still have lots of things to blab about. Your feedback makes me ridiculously happy/wish that I lived where you lived so that I could make you waffles. DID YOU GUYS KNOW THAT I MAKE THE BEST WAFFLES EVER? Well I do. And they are vegan and gluten-free and healthy but you would never know it because they taste like the most amazing, unhealthy things ever. (Copious pictures here from forever ago. You’re welcome.)

Read previous installments:

You’re doing it, you’re blogging.

You have hopefully found your niche and know what you want to be blogging about long-term (whether it’s an assortment of everyday wonders, fiction, grilled cheese, eye shadow, road trips, or anything in between) and you hopefully know when you need to show up and be there for your readers. But here’s where we run into all the problems—when nobody knows about your beautiful blog.

If you don’t shout the news of your existence from the rooftops, nobody is going to know about you and your fabulous blog. In a world where everyone is like, “squirrel!” (or in my case, “Pinterest!”) we need a little nudge. We need a big, loud, “HEY MY NAME IS REALLY COOL AND I HAVE A REALLY COOL BLOG TO MATCH.”

Hello…can you hear me? Rest of the world?

How do we make people see that we are indeed alive and doing awesome things? Hold on guys. I’m going to use that term. SOCIAL MEDIA. DAAAAAH I DID IT The 5th Wave has come*. But I’m so serious, guys. Social media is a powerful tool. Not in the mass marketing sense, the “LETS GO GET DEM FACEBOOK LIKES C’MON” sense, the “INSTAGRAM EVERY DAY OR DIE” sense, but the sense of…well…realism. You are a real person, are you not? You are. (Unless you’re a robot in which case…hi. What is 10 + 5?)
* I actually know nothing about The 5th Wave other than what I gleaned from 20 seconds of teaser trailer YouTube forced me to watch. So this was a rather lazy and ignorant mention. Do forgive.

Let’s use social media like real people, not like marketers. Let’s use it to let people know who we really are and what we are really like. LET’S BE REAL. Because if we’re being real, everyone (or at least the good’uns) are going to love us.

Before you say, “Ugh, I’m a lousy blogger nobody likes my stuff,” and go back to making burritos, give people the opportunity to actually see your stuff. How can somebody like your face if they’ve never clapped eyes on it before?

I’ve seen so many bloggers absolutely perish in the dry desert of the internet, not because they didn’t have a great blog with great content, but because nobody knew that they existed. Make sure people know that you exist!

10 + 5 = 15. I knew that.

We aren’t robots. Let’s prove it. It’s time to utilize social media. And by that, I don’t mean being on Facebook and Twitter 24/7, following hundreds of people and sharing tons of relevant articles. I mean just showing up there, too, and being yourself.

Use Twitter like it’s supposed to be used – be humorous, light-hearted, and short-winded. Use Facebook like it’s supposed to be used – be expressive, honest, and bold (especially with images!) Use Instagram like it’s supposed to be used – people want to see your shoes, your morning coffee, that half-eaten cupcake, tonight’s sunset, and that song you were just listening to.

Be a human being using a social media site. Be you.

A couple of extra tips.

When you do something, tell your followers about it. Multiple times. I’m not going to get into algorithms here, but let’s just say that when you post about something on social media, not everyone will see that post. And even if they do, will it kill them to see it a second time around? Heck no. It might even remind them that they really wanted read that new blog post or check out that photo album.

Again, pace yourself.  Don’t bite off more than you can chew. I think Cait at Paper Fury said it so eloquently in her post about attacking people with friendship (a must-read, btw.) She said, “It’s okay to not be on all the social media sites…Pick one or two social media networks and OWN THEM LIKE A QUEEN.” I really could not say it better.

Spending too much time on social media is just like spending too much time blogging – burn out is inevitable and frightening. Be kind to others and be kind to yourself.

What is your opinion of social networking? Do you tend to over-deliver? Under-deliver? Burn yourself out? Do you post about your new content more than once? Did you get distracted looking at the waffle pictures?? And last but not least, what have YOU learned about social media in your blogging experience?

love,
abbiee

  2. So far I have an Instagram for my blog as well as a Pinterest (which I've semi abandoned because...I'm a very forgetful person). I love how you talk about actually being real because people want to hear what you have to say...I tend to forget that haha. I think more along the lines of "gah no one cares let's move on". xD Thanks for the reminder!!

I always love your posts so much Abbiee. You sound so professional, and I'm always smiling like crazy as I read it hahaha.

    1. Yes! It's soooo true and very easy to fall into the thinking of "nobody cares" but really there are so many people who do care and are just totally in the dark. x) I'm so happy you enjoyed reading this post! AND THAT I MAKE YOU SMILE LIKE WHAAAT THAT IS AWESOME. ♥ I love making people smile. :D

  3. Ehhhh. I don't do any social media other than blogging and email. Anddddddddddddddddddddddddddddd I don't plan to, which is actually fine with me. I'm just not into that sort of thing. I guess, I don't feel like I can be the real me and have social media. It just doesn't fit together (how weird is THAT??? I know, I'm bizarre). Anyway, yeah.

Basically, I look at your blog and I drool because you are such an amazing blogger and then you post these and I'm like, I love her. So much. Like seriously. Firstly, your posts are helpful (even if I'm bad at following advice XDDD), secondly they are funny, thirdly they are YOU (which I love. I totally agree about being a REAL person. That's always my favorite kind of blogger), and fourthly HOW DO YOU GET YOUR POSTS TO LOOK SO AESTHETICALLY PLEASING??? Seriously. They are so great. I could basically eat them if they were real waffles.

P.S. Come make me healthy waffles. I need them in my life.

    1. OH MY WORD YOUUU. ♥ I WUV YOUUU. ugh. I can totally understand you, girl. If social media isn't your thing, then you definitely shouldn't feel obligated to use it. I just hate to see social media accounts go to waste because their authors (right words?? where are you??) are discouraged AND DISCOURAGEMENT IS LIKE SO SAD. :'( so yeah. wanna lift dem chins up. ;)

EVERYTHING YOU SAID IN THIS COMMENT. ♥ i basically just wanna fly to your house and give you a big long hug. THAT MEANS SO SO MUCH TO ME. Like...aesthetically pleasing things make my heart sing and I've been trying so hard to make my blog pretty and so your words mean like SO MUCH to me I can't even talk. gah.

someday my dear i will make you waffles. it's just happening. xD

  6. Love, love, love this post Abbiee! Social media is such an important component of blogging and it really is what helps you find blogging friends. I don't nearly use social media as much as I should, but one of my resolutions was to get better at it. ;) Thanks for sharing and, as always, fabulous post! ♥

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
