the non-official best book awards tag

Hi y’all! Today I’m putting on my tag suit (it’s a thing) and getting my hands dirty in the (very small) pile of books I’ve read in my lifetime! Thank you to the amazing Sami for CREATING this tag (!!!) and for tagging me in it. ♥ I feel super honored. WARNING THOUGH: books my repeat once or twice. Or three times. Or more. (SORRY GUYS I HAVEN’T READ THAT MANY BOOKS. I PERFER BEING OUT OF DOORS.) If you just understood that, please let me know in the comments because I love you.

Best Male Character
I KNOW WHY THIS IS THE FIRST QUESTION. IT IS THE MOST IMPORTANT. (#truth) I have a feeling I’m going to have a very hard IMPOSSIBLE time picking just one favorite guy character, so I’m going to make a list instead. (Because new flash – LISTS ARE THE BEST.)
  • Edmund Pevensie from The Chronicles of Narnia. Like, can we just talk about CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT? I absolutely LOVE was Lewis does with Edmund, letting the redemption story circle his complex, incredible, humanistic, (and adorable) character. I mean, I didn’t even need a reason (because Edmund) but there you have it.
  • Bryce Loski from Flipped. Again, character development. He’s kind of that classic, “you’re such a jerk but I LOVE YOU” character. And his transformation is realistic and perfectly executed. Just so much gah.
  • Mr. Darcy. Duh. I mean, how could he not make it on my favorite guy character list? He’s perfect – but not until like 70% INTO THE BOOK for crying out loud. His character development is amazing and so well written (because Austen just slaughtered everything, fyi.)
  • Four from the Divergent series. OKAY, I KNOW. I didn’t really enjoy these books as much as I wanted to, but Four made up for literally everything that I didn’t like. (I’m kind of serious…) And I’m preeettty sure I like him 98% because of Theo James. Sorry. It’s true. (DIDN’T SEE THAT COMING, DID YOU? Nah, you didn’t. I’m totally neutral on his incredibly gorgeous face.)
  • Joe Hardy. For obvious reasons. (Yeah I even have a Pinterest board for him shhh it’s not weird. I write fanfic. #justified.)

 Best Female Character
UGH UGH UGH THIS ONE IS GOING TO BE HARD, TOO. Okay, list time. (You know you love me.)
  • Eleanor Dashwood from Sense and Sensibility. Is it cheating to like a character because she reminds you of yourself? idk. But that’s how Eleanor is for me. She’s strong but sensitive, and she does a darn good job at keeping her true emotions concealed. But she isn’t reserved because she doesn’t want to get hurt, she’s reserved because she doesn’t want to hurt others.
  • Juli Baker from Flipped. UGH AGAIN CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT. Based on the title of this book, Juli’s outlook on a lot of things (and people) does a 180 degree turn, but it’s so artfully and perfectly written, it seems completely natural. She’s confident and interesting and funny and human. Basically she’s one of my favorite characters ever.
  • Nancy Drew. AND NO IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE FACT THAT I’VE WRITTEN PROBABLY 300,000+ WORDS OF FANFIC THROUGH HER EYES. (#noshame) She’s smart, talented, and so sassy. Like, I don’t think many people know that. The sass on this woman! Sheeesh. xD

Best Protagonist (good guy/main character)
  • UGH WHY IS THIS SO HARD? Can I say all four Pevensies from The Chronicles of Narnia? Too late, I already did. I love how they’re such students, such fighters, such believers. It’s never about justice, it’s about truth. And modern books just don’t have a lot of truth running in the veins of their morals.

Best Antagonist (bad guy/opposing party to main character)
  • Jadis from The Chronicles of Narnia. BECAUSE SHE’S NOT CLICHÉ. It’s so rare to come by an antagonist (especially a female one) who isn’t cliché. The plot development (especially between her and Edmund) is just incredible and so well-written. She has earned her loving name, The White Witch.

Best Plot Development
  • The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe. (Oh I just realized that I’m kind of mentioning Narnia a little too much…WELCOME TO MY LIFE.) The plot of this never ceases to amaze me. Like, the whole story is set to unleash itself before the all the kids even get into the wardrobe. Talk about preparation skillz. C. S. Lewis had ‘em.

Best Plot Twist
  • The revealing of Pip’s benefactor in Great Expectations. The surprise for both Pip and the reader is so artfully led-up-to (a phrase? idk) and the shock and unwillingness he has to accept the truth of the matter is just…gah. I’M A WRITER AND I DON’T HAVE WORDS. SO GAH. THERE.

Book You Threw Across The Room Hardest (in either a bad or good way)
  • Okay For Now by Gary D. Schmidt. Because of what happened to Lil. And Doug’s family situation. And the gymnasium scene and the baseball thing and how he had to read Jane Eyre for school and babysit the Daugherty kids. Basically TOO MANY FEELS. It just left me wailing and groaning and throwing the book into the fireplace. (Just kidding, I didn’t because it was a library book.) So yeah, good and bad, I guess.

Best Romance
  • Pride and Prejudice. I MEAN, COME ON.
  • Sense and Sensibility. No, it’s actually very different from Pride and Prejudice. The characters are so vivid and the ships are just perfect and there’s so much heartbreak and feels and revealing of jerks and revealing of ‘omg he’s so amazing’ guys and yeah. It’s just awesome.
  • Flipped. (Oh I already mentioned this book a couple of times, didn’t I? Huh.) It’s so funny because even though this book is considered a romance, there’s actually very little of it that involves swooning/flirting/togetherness. It has more to do with friendships and family and integrity and how what we look like doesn’t matter and it’s the person on the inside that counts. (Basically it’s deep.)

Best Action
  • The Book Nobody But Me Has Read by my amazing sister, Katie. HAHAHAA JUST HAD TO DO THAT TO YOU ALL SORRY. No seriously, I don’t read much action in books and the action I have read is just…meh. But my SISTER, ON THE OTHER HAND. Son, she can slaughter action sequences. And her book is amazing and gripping and gah. And you’re going to have to wait your turn to read it. ;) You can pre-order at this nonexistent link.

Best Other Book
  • So I feel like I really have to give a nod to My Friend Flicka by Mary O'Hara. I read this book a long time ago, but I still remember it so well, and in my opinion, that marks a really good book. IT’S NOTHING LIKE THE MOVIE FLICKA BTW – because it doesn’t involve a girl main character who trains a horse behind her daddy’s back and says cliché things to him like, “you’re not my father anymore.” (But I like that movie, don’t get me wrong. I JUST HAVE STRANGE RELATIONSHIPS WITH THINGS, OKAY?) Anyway, Ken is super adorable sweet and I just wanna hug him.

Best Book That Made You Change the Way You Think
  • The Four Agreements by don Miguel Ruiz. So technically I’m still getting through this one, but MAN. It is like…amazing. It’s so easy to understand and basically filled with spiritual and scientific truths and wow. Wowowow. It’s quite the fish-slap to make you (or at least me) wake up to what is really going on inside your brain and then changing that to make your outlook on life an inspiring and beautiful one.

Best Inspiring Book
  • Love Wins by Rob Bell. This is a book of questions. Questions that everyone should ask. Oh and then they’re mixed with bits of history and true stories and encounters and scientific facts and mind-blowing scriptures to create the most delicious hot chocolate (idk why hot chocolate let’s just go with it) I’ve ever imbibed. Like, WHOA.

Best Book That Made You Learn Something New
  • As A Man Thinketh by James Allen. I’m sure you guys have heard me mention this book before. It’s AWESOME, in absolute short. It’s one of those gold mines that you can go back to again and again and dig apart. Each sentence is just LOADED and I love stuff like that. Gah.

Best Sad Book
  • Voyage on the Great Titanic: The Diary of Margaret Ann Brady. So I don’t read many sad books, but for some reason my 12-year-old brain felt the need for some good old fashion tragedy? idk. Anyway, I read this book a while ago but it STILL HURTS MY BODY when I think about it. The chemistry between Margaret and Robert was so sincere and perfect – and the last scene with Robert just STOMPED ON MY HEART. I don’t care if this is considered a kids book – IT STOMPED ON MY HEART.

Best Funny Book
Can I put three? I hope so.
  • The Wednesday Wars by Gary D. Schmidt. This book is something to be cherished. Everything about the main character, Holling, is amazing and funny and adorkable. The plot was concocted more perfectly than SOME KIND OF MEDIEVAL WITCH POISON and muaaaaaah it is just such a fun read. I was choking on laughter the whole way through.
  • Flipped by Wendelin Van Draanen. UM, LIKE, CAN YOU TELL THAT I LOVE THIS BOOK? (I’ve probably read it five times and watched the movie double that. But who’s counting, right?) The dual POVs in this book are both brilliant and diverse. And the humor is just spot-on. (Especially the entire sequence involving “the mystery smell.” IF YOU’VE READ THIS BOOK AND KNOW WHAT I’M TALKING ABOUT, LET’S SHARE HYSTERICS IN THE COMMENTS. IF YOU HAVEN’T READ THIS BOOK, THEN YOU SHOULD. LIKE RIGHT NOW. DON’T EVEN FINISH THIS BLOG POST JUST GO READ IT GOODBYE.)
  • Fortunately, the Milk by Neil Gaiman. What’s that? It’s a kids book? SHUDDUP IT IS NOT. It is brilliant. The entire thing. It’s something that has to be experienced, not even talked about. Or actually rather listened to. Because the audiobook read by Neil Gaiman is pretty much the best thing ever. (Especially the part with the wumpires.)

  1. Wow. This tag is just looking better and better. I'll have to do it when I can snatch the time. WHICH MIGHT BE A LITTLE WHILE BUT JUST HOLD YOUR HORSES AND I'LL DO IT. I love books too much to not tell everyone my favorites.

What I think is that you are awesome and hilarious and NARNIAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

I don't think you got redundant with the questions separators... what do you want to do, put a different one between each??? ;-P Nah, it's good.

I have read the Narnia books of course. And Flipped (I stayed up til midnight reading that one, because I wanted to finish it). I have also read Pride and Prejudice, Nancy Drew (some of them), one Hardy Boys book (maybe two?), Great Expectations, and The Book Nobody Has Read (I wish at least. XD).

Not telling any of the answers to these other ones because you'll have to wait for my post ha! :-)

HE IS A FRANCHISE. *coughs awkwardly* I've got to admit I absolutely entirely adore Finn from Bone Gap (which is like the most BEAUTIFUL book of ever by the way). 4. This would be a hard tag - choosing favourites...
'Love Wins' sounds like a good book, I will have to look it up. And your description of 'Voyage on the Great Titanic' reminds me of a similar story: 'Forget Me Not' by Sue Lawson. And it's good to hear that someone else feels the urge to read kid's books. :)

  9. okay, so both you and Kate make me REALLY want to read Great Expectations! it's been on the "to-read" list FOREVER AND EVER AMEN, but it's always been pushed back in favor for school books, boring and pathetic i know… but it shall soon be remedied and then i can understand the language that y'all speak so very well.

and the whole Theo James as Four dilemma i'm pretty sure is a universally accepted struggle. because to requote Sami for the second time this post, "THAT FACE, guh."

and even more importantly that Four's face (if that can happen) are you on Goodreads? because if you aren't, you need to, even if you don't read much because i'm currently clicking back and forth and drooling over all the books you talked about… so yea, get on goodreads please?

thanks for the tag also, you rock girl! i must continue working on the post :)

"...and then i can understand the language that y'all speak so very well." < DUDE THIS MADE MY DAY NOT KIDDING. ♥ eeeep. ^.^

YES IT IS A UNIVERSAL STRUGGLE YOU'RE RIGHT. and oh my gosh no there is nothing more important than Four's face. XD (that was perfect btw) but yes, actually I do have a Goodreads, I'm just never on there. xDDD BUT IT'S PROBABLY A REALLY GREAT WAY TO FIND GOOD BOOKS, RIGHT? hence the name. xD Here's my Goodreads. I shall try and find you on there as well because I usually only take recommendations from awesome people like you. ;)

EEE THANK YOU FOR READING, JANA! Can't wait to see your post. ^.^

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
