#writerslife tag (with gifs and snippets!)

So I guess I should probably explain myself. I said before that I don't do tags, but basically I'm a greedy little spidermonkey and I do whatever tags I feel like doing and if they're INTERESTING ENOUGH, I will do them. So, yep. That's what this is. Interesting, at least, to me. The lovely Cait at Paper Fury didn't technically tag me, but she did tag anyone who is a writer, so I kind of fall perfectly into that little category. (Oh and if you don't already follow Cait, you need to do so immediately. She is, after all, going to rule the world one day, so y'know...it's only the logical thing to do.) Okay. Here we go. EEEE I'M SCARED. No. I'm not. Inhale, exhale. Here we go.

---------------------

WRITE FUEL: WHAT DO YOU EAT/DRINK WHILE WRITING?
Um...nothing? Honestly, I'm a pretty bad multitasker and yes, food is a task. (Except for chocolate. Of course.) I am not to be left alone with chocolate in any way, shape, or form. It's almost as scandalously unacceptable as an unmarried couple in the 1700s.
“What is that?” I asked.
He stopped drinking it for a second to reply. “It’s life.”
“Life?” I raised an eyebrow. “It looks like chocolate milk to me.”
He shrugged. “Yeah, some people call it that, too.”

WRITE SOUNDS: WHAT DO YOU LISTEN TO WHILE WRITING?
People talking. No literally, I do. Some writers can just write no matter what is going on, but I'm sadly not one of them. Any words other than the ones going through my head are so distracting and I just CANNOT HANDLE.

oh and I used to listen to music, but now I listen to music only whilst thinking about my books, and not actually whilst writing them.

WRITE VICE: WHAT’S YOUR MOST DEBILITATING DISTRACTION?

WRITE HORROR: WHAT’S THE WORST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED TO YOU WHILE WRITING?
One time my computer crashed and would not turn back on and I thought I lost:
  • all my writing projects EVER
  • tons of future book plots, written in detail
  • a precious rant about pink lemonade
  • my mind
But, thank the Lord, a computer repair man was able to turn my dear little laptop back on. I promptly bought (that very same hour) an external hard drive and swore my utmost devotion to it. It was a moment of great relief.
“What's wrong?”
I close my eyes again. “What do you think is wrong?”
“I'm guessing that you can't find your notebook.”
“No. I can't just ‘not find it,’ I’ve lost it.” Now my voice is coming out sounding cracked and almost bleeding. “I've lost my mind. My heart. All my organs, all my bones and all my guts—”
“Okay, stop being gross. It's not that bad.”

WRITE JOY: WHAT’S THE BEST THING THAT’S EVER HAPPENED WHILE WRITING OR HOW DO YOU CELEBRATE SMALL VICTORIES?
The best thing that ever happened? Well, a lot of exciting random things just happened to happen while I was writing, but as far as writing-related things go? I FINISHED MY BOOK. And I celebrated with chocolate cake (which is, by the way, a standard celebration for everyone. I'm going to lobby Cait (when she's world-ruler) to strictly enforce the consumption of chocolate cake at every celebratory thing.)

When you live a hop, skip and bike ride away from the ocean, you never really get that little hollow spot in your chest when you think about all the explorers and travelers and late night airport campers. At least, I don’t. I’m happy. So happy, I could scream my joy surplus for the rest of eternity until someone told me to shut up.

WRITE CREW: WHO DO YOU COMMUNICATE WITH OR NOT COMMUNICATE WITH WHILE WRITING?
Communication is pretty much limited to: my sister. We've been writing together since we were little tiny kids (not like, "we both write" but like "we both sit across from each other at the same table and write at the same time." We also get to laugh and share snippets with each other and act like hoodlums. It's awesome.) Most people don't understand our sense of humor. It's sad.

WRITE SECRET: WHAT’S YOUR WRITING SECRET TO SUCCESS OR HIDDEN FLAW?
Secret to success: Not giving up on a project even though I REALLY FEEL LIKE IT SOMETIMES. Seeing a story through to the end is tough, guys -- especially if it's a long story. But it's so worth it in the end. Hidden flaw: getting SUPER EXCITED about future writing projects when I need to be focusing on the current project. Getting through a book is a tiring journey, but it's worth the struggles. Really. It is. (Even though sometimes ALL I WANT IN THE WORLD is to write those two beautiful words: the end.)

WRITE-SPIRATION: WHAT ALWAYS MAKES YOU PRODUCTIVE?
GETTING EXCITED ABOUT MY BOOK. Anything and everything that gets me excited motivates me to get writing! That can be music, movie trailers, plot ideas, chocolate, re-reading favorite scenes, etc. (Also, CHARACTERS. They get me excited about my book because, gosh -- I just love them.)

“I’m just gonna strangle Memphis.”
“Strangle me?” Memphis laughed, pulling himself out of the couch to stare at me.
I nodded. “Yep. With my bare hands.”
“Cool. Looking forward to it.”

WRITE PEEVE: WHAT’S ONE THING WRITERS DO (OR YOU DO) THAT’S ANNOYING?
One thing other writers do: ask me if their book is good over and over and OVER AGAIN. I mean what I say, people. When I say that your writing is awesome, I mean it!! Y'all need some confidence boosts or something, I don't even know. (This one's kind of for you, sis. YES, IT'S GOOD.YES, YOU SHOULD KEEP WRITING IT. YES, I'M SERIOUS. YOUR WRITING IS AWESOME.)
One thing I do: using the words "just," "kind of," "sort of," and "literally" WAY TOO MUCH. Don't get me wrong -- they're great words, but in moderation. I can go a little overboard sometimes. Also, one time, I spelled a recurring word wrong throughout an entire story. IT WAS A HOMOPHONE, WHAT CAN I SAY?!

WRITE WORDS- SHARE ONE SENTENCE FROM A PROJECT. PAST OR PRESENT
HAVEN'T I ALREADY DONE THIS??! Okay, yeah, so the whole "sharing appropraite snippets throughout the post" was technically all my idea (AND TOTALLY CLICKBAIT, MUAHAHA) but even so -- I shall share one final snippet.

“For your comfort, my mom doesn't let me sleep in—no matter how tired I am.”
Alaska raises an eyebrow. “Oh really?”
“Not when my dad's home, anyway.”
“Ha!” She reaches over to punch my shoulder. “That's a pretty sweet gig. I'm jealous.”
I look over at her.
“In my house, it's early to bed, early to rise.” Alaska runs a hand through her wet hair again.
“Who came up with that system?”
“Benjamin Franklin.”

 I TAG THE FOLLOWING WRITERS:
Katie, Cally, Liz, Kate, Hannah Joy, Addy, Olivia, Olivia, Hannah, Olivia, Jo, and any other writer (who follows me or otherwise) and whom I also ridiculously forgot to tag. (And I'm not sure if all the awesome girls I tagged are writers, but if they're not, THEY SHOULD BE 'cause they've got an amazing talent with words, just sayin'.)

------------
Soooo. Snippet feedback? They're from two different writing projects, and I don't expect them to make perfect sense out of context. What is your biggest writing pet peeve? And do you listen to music (or people talking) while you write?

love,
abbiee

  1. I have many thoughts about this post.

    1. I saw this tag when Cait did it and I loved it then and I adore it now. I can't wait to do it myself!
    2. I am so glad that those snippets are from different projects, because I was like, "oh dear, I appear to be having an abnormally stupid day today, nothing makes sense." So, whew!
    3. Speaking of which, how do you work on multiple projects at once?? How does anyone do this??? My brain would explode. I'm a one-book-at-a-time girl. I can't even edit an old one and write a new one at the same time! (Book-writing is a long process for me, obviously.)
    4. I really wish I could read both of your books - your characters seem so quirky and funny and I adore them already! If you're looking for any beta readers...I will happily volunteer as tribute. :p
    5. I am so excited to do this tag! (Although with, I did not realize there were so many blogging Olivias! There are THREE OF us!! :o what.

    1. RE 1: EEE, YAY! I'm so excited and I can't wait to see your tag, Olivia!!
RE 2: Haaha, no indeed! Out-of-context snippets certainly can get super confusing...but then, so can my writing. (Oops..)
RE 3: Haha, my sister was just saying almost the exact same thing to me this morning! She, too, is a one-book-at-a-time girl...but I just get so restless, y'know? ugh. I BLAME IT ON MUH ADD BABY. Even so, it can get confusing. Especially if a book has a really complicated plot. >.<
RE 4: OH MAN I cannot wait for you to read my stories!! Seriously, would you like to beta read? It might be a little while before I have something ready (slow-poke editor over here...) but that would be AWESOME because I really value your opinion. :)
RE 5: Hehe, I really didn't try to spread out all the Olivias, sorry... xD Haha. Thank you for the sweet comment, dear!! ♥

  2. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH OH MAN I LOVE THIS EEEEEEEE. the title of the post totally got me excited and drew me in. ;-) YESSSS. I'll do this if I remember. XDDD ...but I probably won't. And if I have time. But besides that, I WANT TO READ YOUR BOOK. OH MY GOSH YES. Every snippet was hilarious and I died and everything and sdkfhabgrkbkgjn YESSSSS. *screams* SO amazing.

  4. Hahahaha omg seeing three Olivias up there really cracks me up xD I literally had to hover over each one to see the different blogs. And to my surprise, little old me was one of them! :O Wow! Well thank you so much! ^^ I'm not an official novel author like you ;) but I will definently try my hand at this tag!

Thanks so much again for tagging me, it's really so sweet!

(P.S. your writing is so amazinggg like wow even from the little snippets I see it's inspiring and funny and attention-grabbing and...whenever you're ready to reveal the whole thing to us, I'm ready to read it.)

(P.P.S. also congrats on finishing something! I've never finished a book/story in my entire life because I get bored and cut it off in the middle. then I think up new characters and get all excited and write like one paragraph about them and just go "nope". thus is the cycle of my "writing" [quotes because you can't really call what I do writing :P])

    1. Haha, my sister said the same thing about the three Olivias! xD It is funny...and you're welcome, dear! Your writing style is magnificent, even if you don't do much fiction. You blog posts always leave me inspired and moved. ♥
P.S. THANK YOU SO MUCHHH. literally, "inspiring and funny and attention-grabbing" is what I LIVE FOR so thank you so much that made my day! ^.^ And I'm super excited for you to read the whole thing, too. eek!
P.P.S. I feel your pain, it is SO hard to finish a writing project. (Definitely my biggest vice.) But the satisfaction is worth it in the end. I have so many "open" books, still, though... haha. Thank you for the sweet comment, Olivia!! :)

  5. This looks like one of the coolest tags ever! I love all your answers and gifs and how you were able to weave in little snippets of your writing. And thank you so, so, so much for thinking about me and tagging me. It might take me awhile to get around to doing it, but I definitely will! :)

  6. Oh my goodness. I love this post. The way your wrote it was so engaging and inspiring. I've been a bit tied up moving to Europe lately and my writing has slid to the backest of back burners, but you've inspired me to pick up my pen again. Seriously though, your little snippets throughout had me chuckling and downright laughing. Keep up the great work!

  8. I LOOOOOOVEEEEE THIS SO MUCH. THIS WAS JUST INCREDIBLE TO READ!!! :D And don't even worry: you won't have to lobby for celebratory chocolate cake because it's going to happen. I promise. I can't even stand to look at this world with its lack of celebratory chocolate cake on ALL occasions. Omg, I need to speed this takeover along.
Omggg, and I am the same with fun tags! I just steal them if they look fun because life is short. One must steal fun tags. *nods*

I ALSO ADORED ALL YOUR SNIPPETS. They were incredible even out of context. ^_^

And omg omg I'm the same with no music!! AND FINALLY I HAVE MET SOMEONE WHO UNDERSTANDS ME, OMG THIS IS GOOD NEWS. *hyperventilates* I love music, I do, but it just distracts me so much. And I also found it was manipulating what I wrote. Like I'd end up going with the feel of the music (if it went happy/sad) instead of what the book wanted me to do. NOT GOOD. But music is awfully inspiring for plotting. Also whilst pinteresting. Which is plotting, of course. VERY crucial to the writing process *nods*

And sisters are FAB for discussing bookish things with. My sister doesn't write anymore because highschool swallowed her. But she did NaNo one year and I did and it was sooo fun just encouraging each other. :')
