west coast diaries - part six: penn cove, langley, and fort casey (again)

*ignores how pale and sickly i look in this shot*

May 18. First thing in the morning, me and Dad decided to take a kayak ride out to Deception Island, which is right off the beach. So we put the kayak in at the beach and paddled out. We didn't actually get out on the island, but we paddled around the island, fighting some vigorous currents. We saw three GIANT purple starfish! It was amazing. They were probably 12 inches around, vibrant purple, clinging to the barnacles on the rocks. I touched one of them – it felt rough and hard and wet. Almost like how you’d imagine a whale to feel. (Unfortunately I didn't bring my camera because I was afraid of it drowning or something.)

After lunch, we drove down to a little wharf on Penn Cove and walked around – there was a small museum/gift shop where they had whale and porpoise and sea lion bones on display. Then we drove down to a place called Coupeville or Langley (or something of that nature) and walked around a bit in the shops there. We went into the Langley Whale Center (which is operated by the Orca Network) and talked with a very friendly woman who worked there about whales and the different displays.

After this, we drove down to Fort Casey fort again. Apparently we hadn't explored enough the first time. I walked around with Katie and took lots of gritty pictures. But we didn't get to see the catacombs. Ah well. Next time.

kind words are like raindrops on the desert. they make me bloom with happiness, as absolutely cliche and cheesy as that sounds. even if it's just a simple alt+3 i will heart you for it. so, go ahead! MAKE MY DAY. literally.
